Rocky’s is a small, laid-back place well known with the expats that live in Sosua and is run by Mark from Montreal. Many of them come in for breakfast every morning. All items are prepared with natural ingredients and no preservatives. Hence, food does not reach your table quickly after ordering. But there is the option of calling in your order. This place is also known for its very reasonably priced meals, such as $2.30 for an egg-and-cheese sandwich lunch. And a pitcher of coffee is about less than a $1. A variety of pizzas are the main dinner meal, a variety of sandwiches, burgers, and salads for lunch, and all combinations of egg dishes for breakfast. Because of the reasonable drink prices ...Read More

$65, half-day, including lunch Four men from England and one from Boston showed up for this ATV tour. The guide fitted all of us for helmets and gave us a brief idea of how the semi-automatic vehicles worked before having us drive around in circle to get the feel. The bike was rather big, the guide told me, and he offered to drive it, making me out to be a passenger. I declined and chose to stretch my legs in order to reach the brakes. Luis motioned for me to get behind him as we headed down the path single file. A small wooden bridge was coming in view when the guide motioned for us to stop. I stopped; the guy behind rear-ended me and was rear-ended himself. The next fellow ran off i...Read More

8am to 2pm, $60 swimmers only, includes lunch Jumping, climbing, and upper-body strength The tour operator I chose is the only one that goes as far as the twelfth waterfall. After arriving at a sandy parking lot, everyone put on their swimsuits and tennis shoes and left everything else behind. A waterproof camera would be the only thing you might want to take. Nothing that goes around the neck that could possible choke you later is advised. We had to get wet right at the beginning, crossing the river in waist-deep water. There’s nothing like walking up a dusty trail with wet clothing and shoes, which turn to mud in no time. Although we covered ourselves with everything from bug s...Read More

8am to 3:30pm, $65, became 8am to 6:30pm intermediate hike This tour was supposed to begin at 8am, with lunch at the top of Mount Isabel Del Torres and a cable car tour down, ending at 3:30pm. Well, one out of three isn’t bad. This lush hike took a little longer than our guide Orlando expected. The terrain was rugged but complicated by fairly recent rains, making the ground muddy and leaves quite slippery. Neither I nor the wife of the couple I was climbing with was slowed too much, but the husband was. He had a tendency to get a bit out of breath and need frequent breaks. Not one to be in a hurry, this didn’t bother me. I enjoyed the views of Puerto Plato Bay and photographed some of th...Read More

$99 all-day fee includes lunch Great for swimmers, upper and lower strength, stamina Includes climbing, jumping, swimming, rappelling, and jumps at high as 48 feet Whereas cascading tours require no equipment, canyoning includes helmets, seat/chest harness, belay device, carabineers, a wetsuit, and mind-over-matter attitude. Okay, I just had to pass on the half-day Magic Mushroom and the full-day Pleasure Dome canyoning tour and choose the full-day Big Bastard. Only the latter had an age requirement of 18, with prior knowledge, good shape, and swimming knowledge. Well, I did qualify for the first requirement. Good shape over 40? I dive, but swim? Where would I have gotten...Read More

Although walking in a stream from one to two feet deep seems easy, it wasn’t. The rocks were very slippery, and the equipment seemed to make normal balance nearly impossible. Add to that that the water was now churned up by the people ahead of me, so I couldn’t see whether I need to lift my foot higher to clear a rock or squat low to handle a deep hole. Oddly enough, the rock formations beneath the waterfalls were not slippery. Hence, Mike would have us walk right to the edge before diving in. The one exception was a narrow fall that, because of the curvature of the rock, he braced his leg across the fall for us to position ourselves. He was very specific about taking three running steps and ...Read More
