Fort Brown Condo Share

A June 2005 trip to Brownsville by Ombuddy

What a pleasant surprise! We had low expectations when we booked Fort Brown. The name, after all, does not trigger the fantasy reflex. But we now consider it our home away from home.

Fort Brown Condo Share is, actually, in a great location to enjoy the many family activities available at the tip of Texas. The beaches of South Padre Island are only a 25-minute drive away. The bridge to Matamoros, Mexico, is literally at your doorstep--a short stroll from the condos. And green fees for the golf course across the street are waived for guests.

Quick Tips:

Bring your golf clubs, don't miss the Gladys Porter Zoo, and be sure to take the affordable tour of Matamoros that can be set up by Frank, the manager. Think of Frank as your native informant.

Best Way To Get Around:

A car is a must to take full advantage of the many leisure opportunities in the area.

Story/Tip

Admittedly, if you are looking for luxury and planned activities, this is not the place for you. The condos, though recently remodeled, were built in the 1960s. We like to think of it as old school. The pool, hot tub, and grounds, though, are impeccably maintained by Frank and his staff. There is daily housekeeping service and a laundry area on site.

Frank is a professional manager. He is not full of smiles--but he is a great source of information. We came to rely on his insider's advice about the area. Be sure to ask Frank to assist you in setting up a tour of Matamoros.

Enjoy the beaches on South Padre, but eat in Port Isabel. Check out the seafood markets in Fort Isabel. One will boil your shrimp free of charge. The White Sands Restaurant in Port Isabel is where the locals dine. It’s nothing fancy, just great seafood that is reasonably priced.
