Bed & Breakfast in Cape May

A May 2005 trip to Cape May by dwl123

A last-minute decision to take the lovely lady to a weekend getaway led us to some wonderful R&R at a B&B in Cape May.

Staying at the Mainstay Inn was a wonderfully romantic and private experience. Unlike other B&Bs, which are often old homes with thin walls, we really felt like we got our privacy at this inn. Bringing our bikes was a wonderful idea, because Cape May is easily discovered by bike.

Quick Tips:

Consider biking. Bring your own or rent very affordably if you don't mind riding someone else's cruiser.

Best Way To Get Around:

Walking is fine. Biking works great in the immediate vicinity. Driving allows easy access to nearby towns like Cape May Court House.
We stayed at the Officers Quarters Suites across from the actual inn. This was a newer development, but it was furnished very nicely to give it a traditional B&B feel. The suite was HUGE--about 600 square feet, two bedrooms, a large bathroom, living room with fireplace, and kitchenette with dining table. Outside, we had a private porch with rockers and little tables! The accommodations came with off-street parking. Televisions in the living room and bedroom and a Wi-Fi signal can be caught from the main inn.

Attraction

We went in early May, just prior to peak beach season. The air temperature didn't allow for much sunning on the beach, but we did walk along the beach. The sand is a bit rougher than on some beaches. There were lots of lovely shops and restaurants on the main beach drive. While walking along the beach, I noticed many motels across the street. I really think that in Cape May, a B&B is the preferred type of accommodation.

Many B&Bs in Cape May offer bicycles for guest use. Otherwise, there are shops where you can rent bikes for use for the day very affordably. We decided to bring our bikes. Although getting them in and out of the car was a bit of work, the biking made up for it.

Cape May is definitely a great place to discover by bike. Traffic is light, roads are flat, and there are many places to just get lost in. We came from New York, and the 3-hour trip meant that Cape May is not a day-trip destination. However, if anyone stays there more than a couple of days, the bike really makes a lot of sense. You've got to do it!
