3 days in Jinan, China

A November 2005 trip to Jinan by Pyra

Baotu Park of the Springs, JinanMore Photos

I spent 3 days in Jinan, in the Shandong Province and 500km south of Beijing, for a congress. I visited Baotu Spring Park in the centre of town and Qianfoshan, the Thousand-Buddha Mountain. Both are worth a visit when in the pleasant city of Jinan on the edge of a plain.

Baotu Park of the Springs, Jinan
Visit the 1000-Buddha Mountain. Take the chair lift up the mountain, then walk along the Buddhist temples up to the top. Take in the breathtaking view, with the city, mountains in the background, and Yellow River behind the city skyline and sip a soft drink in the pagoda on the top. Then walk back down to where you can ride the rodelbahn down the mountain.

Also visit the Baotu Park in the center of town. For a small fee at the entrance, you can take in the fish ponds, Chinese architecture, flowers, and a general relaxed atmosphere in the middle of an impressive skyline.

Quick Tips:

Best Way To Get Around:

Taxis are cheap and an adventure due to the local driving style.

Lobby
For 30€ per night, including free broadband, this hotel is a mix of '60s luxury and a Chinese atmosphere. Rooms and facilities are a bit worn and the air-conditioning was malfunctioning (even after repair), but the beds were good and the environment quiet. One or two members of the reception staff speak English, and everybody is extremely polite and friendly.

Hotpot in Jinan
This is a lively, well-run place that seems to be by a chef who made his name with his first restaurant of this type in Beijing. They have excellent Szechwan, and other regions’, food. One evening we had hot-pot (see picture), which is only for the not too faint-hearted.

It has a family-style atmosphere, and after dinner, one can go upstairs into the Carrefour to see the price difference with the West for bicycles, potatoes, and just about everything else.
