Boardwalking it in Atlantic City

Overview

Quote:
On of the most memorable moments of the trip for me was when I rode The Crazy Mouse rollercoaster on the Steel Pier across from Trump's Taj Mahal. I also really enjoyed just walking along the boardwalk at night with my boyfriend and looking at all the lights.Quick Tips: Check out the show and event schedule at the casinos before you go. There are some interesting performances and you might want to plan on spending a little extra to catch a concert or something. Also, staying at the casinos during the week is much cheaper than on weekends or over holidays. There are all sorts of mid-week packages and specials. Check into these deals if you are flexible with your travel dates.Best Way ...Read More

Alright...the Irish Pub & Inn was a disappointment for us, but it isn't all bad. It is really more like a European pension than a motel, a very old one. Our room was $85 a night, but it was the weekend before the 4th of July and we had a private bathroom. Check out their web site for the normal rates (which are much lower) at www.theirishpub.com. Our room was tiny. My boyfriend would only shower and sleep there because he felt claustrophobic. He spent the rest of his time at the Inn (when I was showering) out on their porch, actually a nice, cool spot with a good view of the boardwalk. The place is also very old. Some people might think this gives it character, maybe it does. It also gives it...Read More

The steakhouse had a nice view of the boardwalk, but the food was below average. I had a filet mignon and vegetables. The baked potato was good and the steak was fine, but the vegetables were flavorless. My boyfriend had chicken parmesan and he thought it was pretty greasy. The service was decent, but the restaurant had no atmosphere whatsoever. We tried this place on our first night because it was right on the boardwalk and we were hungry and tired, but there are better places to eat than at this mall.

This was the best meal we had while in Atlantic City. My boyfriend and I both left the Bar & Grill stuffed and quite happy. We got there right before the dinner rush (around 6:15pm). The place was getting pretty crowded by the time we left. It is a small, dark restaurant with a bar atmosphere - TV's, smoke, music, and red and white checkered table clothes. Don't let the appearance fool you, they have awesome seafood!! My boyfriend got a whole Maine lobster (for $10) and a baked potato. He also had a salad and we shared some delicious bread. I opted for a plate of stone crab claws. They were soooo good!! I also had a basket of French fries. There is a one-drink minimum, even with dinner. We...Read More

Make no mistake about it...lots of bar & grills in Atlantic City. My boyfriend and I ate breakfast here. They serve it until 2pm, but it is such a strange experience because it is bright and sunny outside and then you go into a dark and smoky bar where it could easily be 2 am, not 10 am. There were lots of televisions and music playing too. At any rate, the breakfast was pretty good. I got French toast and my boyfriend ordered eggs and pancakes. His eggs could have been better, but our French toast and pancakes were really tasty. It was cheap and we really had a hard time finding decent places to eat breakfast. We don't smoke, but lots of people do (like you didn't know that already) and we co...Read More

Caesars

Attraction

I just played the slots. They had several different games. The casino was large and not too crowded. Gambling really isn't that big of a deal for me. I only spent $20 in all, but I really liked looking around the hotel/casino. It is fairly elaborate with giant Roman statues and fountains. My boyfriend thought it was a little over the top, but I think it is worth checking out. Also, Caesars offers courses from professional gaming instructors (for people like me who know how to play virtually nothing other than Go Fish). Call 1-800-CAESARS and ask for VIP services to find out more.

Historic Gardner's Basin

We got a brochure about this spot from an information booth on the boardwalk. It sounded great. There is an Ocean Life Center with an aquarium and there are supposed to be various cruises that leave from the area, as well as restaurants and shops. The brochure even mentioned parasailing. When my boyfriend and I pulled up we didn't see very many cars in the parking lot (clue #1). We started with the Ocean Life Center. Admission for adults was $7. I think the price for children was $4 or $4.50. Don't pay a dime!! My boyfriend was looking around from the entrance and he asked the lady at the front desk what else there was. She answered (quite honestly) with 'nothing', but an observation deck on...Read More

There is nothing great about this mall. We really didn't look around that much. We ate here (see journal about Top Deck Steakhouse). There are several restaurants on the 'top deck' that claim to have great ocean views. The mall also houses a food court and some snack shops. There is a Kay-Bee Toy Store, Foot Locker, and a Gap among other things. We looked around a neat store, Magnetism, which had lots and lots of (you guessed it) magnets. The best part of the mall is the view from the top deck on the outside. You can go up from the inside and then exit and walk around.

This is probably Atlantic City's most famous pier. It is over 100 years old. We had walked by it several times during our stay, but we didn't actually go out and explore it until our last afternoon. There are rides (mostly for younger children) and lots of games. The people working on the pier are very friendly and lots of fun. They seem eager to give away prizes. We tried to win a Kermit the Frog to no avail. Even if you aren't fond of amusement parks you should walk out the length of the pier and look back at the boardwalk. If you get the chance, go at night because the lights from all of the rides and casinos dancing on the water make for an amazing and colorful sight!! The pier wasn't too crowd...Read More

This is billed as 'the world's most famous' and 'America's first' boardwalk. It is the longest boardwalk (4 and a half miles) that I have ever visited. It is wooden and very wide which makes it pretty easy to walk even when there is a crowd. The game Monopoly was based on the streets that run to the boardwalk here. You can look for the street signs on the side closest to the ocean. I really enjoyed the time we spent wandering along the boardwalk. The ocean was on one side of us and the 'sights' were on the other. There are plenty of tourist trap type stores with postcards, t-shirts and cheap souvenirs. You'll also see quite a few taffy shops. I think salt water taffy was supposed to...Read More

The Taj Mahal is huge. We used their parking garage for our car while we were here, so we went through the place several times. The hotel is something to see just for the lights and decor. The interior is just as colorful and opulent as the exterior. Be sure to check it out at night when all the lights are glowing. There are several nice fountains here and the landscaping outfront catches the eye too. The gambling area was larger than some of the other casinos and therefore, less crowded. There is a Hard Rock Cafe attached to the Taj Mahal and the Steel Pier is right across from it. I really liked just walking through this hotel/casino. The theme restaurants inside are neat to see and the building its...Read More

Absecon Lighthouse

First of all I should admit that my boyfriend and I only drove by this attraction, but it really wasn't all that big of a deal from what we could see. The lighthouse was built in 1857 and is currently under renovation. At present the light doesn't seem to work. After renovation is complete the light should be bright again and the lightkeeper's cottage is supposed to be a gift shop. The light house is unimpressive at best. The most memorable feature of this lighthouse is that it is located several blocks from the coast and ocean. It sits in a fenced lot a few blocks from the bustle of the boardwalk, but not near the ocean at all. We skipped the lighthouse because it...Read More

You can get a monthly guide to events and special deals by calling 1-800-BOARDWK or visit www.shorecast.com. The guide is pretty helpful and it is free, so that is a bonus. It continues some coupons, but most importantly there is a listing of upcoming concerts and special events for that month. The guide also has a section with Editor's Picks and a decent listing of the area's restaurants. You can find addresses and phone numbers for the main hotels, casinos, and attractions in the booklet (or on the website) too. Also included are listings for some of the surrounding towns as well. My boyfriend and I thought the guide was worth the phone call it took to get it mailed...Read More
