An August 2003 trip to Quito by dawnlisette

Modern meets AncientMore Photos

The capital of Ecuador is one of the most spectacular cities in the world. With 400+-year-old-churches coated in gold paint; lush, green volcanic peaks looming over the city; and an intoxicating mixture of life, bus exhaust, music, and beauty, Quito is a treat to visit or live in.

Overview

Modern meets Ancient
Quito is an excellent base for your travel in Ecuador. Halfway between the coast and the Amazon rainforest, it is a huge tourist hub. As a result, international cuisine is plentiful, lodging ranges from dorm beds to luxury suites, and public transportation is plentiful.

Quick Tips:

Places to check out:

El Panecillo
Ichimbia
The new Teleférico
Guápula Bars and Cafes
Parque Metropolitano

Best Way To Get Around:

Buses are great, and the trolley and ecovia are traveler-friendly, with designated stops and periodic signs.

Hotel

Los Alpes
I found this hotel to be old, stuffy, and overpriced. There are so many unique, sunny, clean, and comfortable boutique hotels in Quito, and I was really not impressed with this hotel. The carpet was threadbare, the bed was old and saggy, the decoration in the room was nonexistent, and the whole place had a distinct musty smell to it.

L'Auberge Inn Hostal
This is a cozy backpacker's retreat between the Centro Histórico and the Mariscal. The rooms are cozy and clean, the hot water is steamy, and a central garden connects everything together. The service is great, and most are English-speaking. The pizza place downstairs is delicious and also has great veggie sandwiches.
