A May 2005 trip to Erie by D_a_n

We took a great 1-day trip from Buffalo, NY, and it was definitely worth the 100-minute drive. The peninsula where the park is located offers many summer activities.

Presque Isle State Park
You can drive around the peninsula and stop at one of many parking areas to enjoy hiking, beaches, boating, and taking pictures of the nice views or wildlife (turtles seemed to be everywhere in some of the lagoons) and two lighthouses. Admission to the park is free!

Quick Tips:

See this page for more park information and maps. Stop at the Interpretive Center for a free park map, since it is the first location where you can get it. Another interesting site with maps and more information is here.

Best Way To Get Around:

We drove around in a car, which was hassle-free, and there were plenty of parking spots - but it was just the beginning of the season, so I am not sure how it is in mid-summer. Based on what I saw, biking would be fast and fun.

Boat Ride
You can rent a wide variety of boats: canoes, single and double kayaks, row boats, and motor boats. Canoes are the cheapest, starting at $10, with discounts for additional hour(s). Motor boats are $30 an hour, with multi-hour discount also available.

You can boat only on the enclosed lagoons and are not allowed under any bridges, which would let you out onto Lake Erie.

You can see water lilies, other plants all around you, and turtles in this reservation.

There are two lighthouses you can see in the Presque Isle State Park. One is at the North Pier (see this site for a nice map). The other one is between Mill Road Beaches and Beach #9. See the two images attached.
