Best Things Nearby:There are many local theaters, including the Goodspeed Opera House, Gillette Castle and its wonderful grounds, the beautiful towns of Essex and Chester (they are a must in an area of lovely, quaint New England towns and villages), Long Island Sound, great shopping, casinos, Rhode Island, Mystic, and Old Saybrook.Best Things About the Resort:This is a first-class resort. Our unit was called a one-bedroom but is really a two-bedroom, as there is a very large loft area that has twin beds. We had a kitchenette, which consisted of a stovetop, microwave oven, and refrigerator. It was very adequate for a couple but could be challenging for a family (very little c...Read More

I actually mention Bill's not because of the food, but because on Tuesday nights, they feature a swing band ('40s/'50s music} called Tuxedo Junction. The place is mobbed, so you have to go before 6:30 pm to get a seat. There are mostly locals, and they have a great time singing and dancing. It was a real treat!!

It has a very plain decor but great seafood! They have very reasonable lunches in a range of $6 to $9. The service was very good, and the staff was friendly.

This is for the special evening, as it is a little pricey for the average person. It is very good, and the atmosphere is romantic and relaxing. The dining room looks out onto Long Island Sound and the grounds of the resort. On a nice day or evening, there is also a deck you may dine on.

Lunch is very reasonably price, and there are good menu selections. The Sunday brunch is amazing--be sure to bring a big appetite!

Gillette Castle

Story/Tip

One of the disadvantages to early May is that many of the tourist attractions have not yet opened for the season. Gillette Castle is one of those attractions. It is located in a state park, a great place for walking and picnicking. The "castle" itself is located at the highest point on the grounds, with a wonderful view of the Connecticut River (to me, the castle looks like something that was built by the Flintstones!), which makes a tour of the inside even more intriguing! But the tours don't begin until Memorial Day. You can walk freely around the outside of the building and look into the windows, but it's not quite the same. I think I may go back in the early fall just to have a picnic and do th...Read More
