Catalina Island

A January 2004 trip to Dana Point by haw1125

The morning was beautiful. My dad and I walked out onto the patio of our friend's house we were staying at. We sat in the patio chairs and sipped coffee, taking in the beautiful sights and sounds of Southern California. We were relaxing before our day trip to Catalina Island.

Attraction | "The Day Trippers"

It is a magical place. You ride up to the island in a boat and are let off for the day. Your senses are trying to take everything in all at once. It is like an adult playground. You want to run around the winding sidewalk and run to the beautiful turquoise water, then run into the beautiful shops to buy some of the historical art work or a snazzy souvenir T-shirt.

You can see, at the other point of the isle, the huge casino. It is white, round, and a beautiful building. The island is steeped in history, and the old Victorian buildings that are hanging onto the side of the cliff are absolutely amazing. There is so much to do and see.

Attraction | "Biking around the Island"

There aren't any cars on the island. You can rent a bike or a golf cart or walk. I wanted a gold cart at first, but felt a bike would make the trip more exciting, and I felt child-like anyway, so that added to the fun of it. We rode through the winding steep streets and out to the tip of the island to the casino.

We also met a lot of locals. They rarely leave the island, and it was neat to think of the simple life they lead out there. You have contact with day trippers and the other few people who live there year-round. It is pretty interesting. I thought biking from site to site and store to store was the best way to explore the island.
