Between Tampa and Sarasota, there is way more to do than one week allows. Busch Gardens and its sister water park, Adventure Island, easily filled a day each. We also took in the natural wonders through a boat trip and manatee-watching. We had the inside scoop on manatee-watching from a relative who works for Florida Wildlife, doing manatee research. My favorite days, though, were the ones relaxing on the Gulf Coast beach.Quick Tips: • Purchase theme park tickets ahead of time on the Internet through the park website or a travel site such as Expedia. We saved over per ticket! Don't forget to ask about two-fer kinds of deals. We paid close to half-price per ticket when we bought the Bus...Read More

Best Things Nearby:The private beach is just across the street, and the channel is located on the back side of the condo. There is fishing off the dock, as well as boat and ski-doo rides and rentals within a couple of miles. For the Florida visitor missing the theme park rides, no worries, as Busch Gardens is located just in Tampa. Water parks, a top-10 family-rated zoo, a hands-on science museum, and a renowned children's museum are also within a reasonable drive.Best Things About the Resort:This resort has a very nice fishing dock on the channel side for residents of the condo. This is also where the barbeques are located. Across the street, toward the front, is the priv...Read More

During our visit, I could easily see why Child magazine voted Lowry Park zoo the #1 family zoo in the country. The park is compact in size, yet they use the space wisely to create the feeling of openness. This is especially nice when walking through the zoo with small children. The park is broken up into the usual animal areas - Africa, Australia, etc. Each area has a nice variety of hands-on activities, mixed with the traditional look-and-see-the-animal exhibits. One of our favorite animal areas was the manatee exhibit and the hands-on stingray pool. There are severa...Read More

Manatee watching at TECO

One of the highlights of our visit to Florida was watching auntie at work. She works for Florida Fish & Wildlife Research Institute on the manatee photo identification project. If not for this, we would have never discovered TECO Big Bend Power Station on our own. TECO stands for Tampa Electric Company. Since manatees are mammals, they tend toward warmer water. The power station puts out warm water, so the manatees are drawn there. TECO funded the Manatee Viewing Center, and it was well worth the side trip. One of the things that makes this such a neat side trip is t...Read More
