Springtime in Savannah

An April 2003 trip to Savannah by emptynest

Quote: We spent five nights in the Savannah area in bed-and-breakfast accommodations, enjoying the local foods, touring the backroad areas, and walking on the beach of Tybee Island.

This is a romantic bed-and-breakfast situated in the center of 'old' Savannah. It is a short walk to the park and shopping and historic tour opportunities. Savannah is designed with several 'squares', which are parks surrounded by historic homes, shops, churches, and restaurants. The B&B has a large porch perfect for watching people and meeting the others staying there. Breakfast was plentiful, and there was a common area with water bottles, fruit, and granola bars to take along as we hiked the historic city. In the afternoon there was a wine and cheese time on the porch where we could share our adventures for the day and get ideas for the next day. The owner was friendly and helpful. This was a new home built as a B&B. Our room was identified as ocean view, but only if we were on the balcony stretching out to see around other homes closer to the beach. It was a short walk to the beach and ocean and a quiet and secluded place. Breakfast was creative and filling, and there were cookies and lemonade for us in the afternoon. This didn't offer the best opportunitiy to get to know the others staying there, but with only three rooms, there also were not a lot of people to meet. They had bikes to use and beach chairs, so all we had to do was show up and enjoy the secluded beach and ocean sounds.

This was a fun experience from the time waiting in line for seating until the meal was complete. While waiting for a table, we were served fresh, warm biscuits and griddle cakes. We were encouraged to 'buddy up' with others to speed seating and did this. The wait wasn't extremely long at lunch time. We had appetizer of fried green tomatoes, which we shared, and then a meal that reminded us of times long gone, when fat grams and carbs were not considered. Food was plentiful and well done. There were so many desserts to choose from that it was hard to select one to share.

This is a historic home renovated to a restaurant. Candlelit tables with linen tablecloths secluded in a variety of mid-size rooms in the converted house encourage a romantic dinner experience. The menu options sound "homestyle" but were true culinary experiences, well displayed. I ordered pot roast, and it was a mountain of delicately cooked vegetables and beef.
