When I first happend on Irving Stone's wonderful The Agony and the Ecstasy, I became obsessed with the idea of visiting Italy. And more specifically, with the thought of prowling through Firenze. And now, after three visits, it's a city that still does not disappoint. I think one could spend a lifetime in Florence and never run out of things to see. It seems to me to be a very livable city. Not nearly as large and intimidating as its big brothers, Roma or Milano, there are more museums than the average tourist could hope to see in one visit. The Uffici (Italian for offices which this building used to contain) and the Accademia, housing the fabulous David, are the most famous. Th...Read More

Hotel Casci

I almost hate to include a tip about Hotel Casci and the Lombardis because it's getting all too hard to find availability here today! But this has to be my favorite little bargain in Florence. The Lombardis are wonderful hosts and the rooms are clean, comfortable, well-appointed and reasonably priced. The location can't be beat. Two blocks from the Duomo, two blocks from the Accademia, and easy walking distance to nearly anything in Florence, this home away from home will not fail to please even the pickiest of travelers. On our first visit to Florence, we only had reservations for 2 days and decided to stay 4. Every day, Senora Lombardi would move our bags to a new room. On the ...Read More

The Jolly Hotel is popular with tour groups. For this reason, the breakfast room is populated by big groups in a hurry to eat and catch the bus for their next destination. But also, this is indicative that you might be able to negotiate a better rate for your own party! The hotel has several floors and 163 rooms. The common areas are very nice, with a large lounge and bar, a gift shop, and a charming, small restaurant. The rooms are very comfortable. We had air-conditioning, a balcony, well-stocked mini bar, and a comfortable sitting area. While the hotel is not exactly in the City Centre, it's only about a 15-minute walk to Ponte Vecchio. And the walk is along the river and pas...Read More

There are only a few moments of perfect serendipity in the life of a traveler. One of mine occured on my very first visit to Florence. We arrived late in the day, absolutely starving. After dropping our bags and enjoying a wonderful meal at Toscano, we started strolling on a warm, full-moon evening in search of the Arno. My travel partner, Janet, was on a roll, ranting about how there would NEVER ever be a site that awed and amazed her as much as the Duomo in Milano. Just as she was about to reiterate her conviction, we turned the corner, and there it was. Awash in moonlight, and relatively devoid of people, the marble facades of the Duomo met our gaze, challenging Janet to not change her m...Read More
