Fall Weekend Getaway

An October 2004 trip to Greenville by chefsue

New England's best-kept secret is Greenville, Maine, at the base of Moosehead Lake. The area is a four-season destination. We stayed at the Greenville Inn, which has everything: a yummy breakfast; fabulous views; a superb restaurant; suites, rooms, and cottages; and an amazingly historical charm.

The Greenville Inn at Moosehead Lake is an exceptional inn that has everything from luxury suites and charming rooms filled with antiques to English cottages. The main building is a true historical gem, having been built in 1885 by a lumber baron. The hand-carved woodwork is amazing and well cared for. The breakfast was a full buffet with many delicious choices. The views were spectacular, and the innkeepers warm and friendly. A lovely large porch with many wicker chairs was enjoyed before dinner. The restaurant was one of the best we have enjoyed both in food quality and atmosphere.

Attraction

Moose are these mysterious, giant creatures that outnumber humans. If you want to have a moose encounter, take a moose safari with one of the guides. Our guide picked us up at the inn and drove us in his truck for 30 minutes deep into the Maine woods. We parked, and he unlocked his stored canoe on the shore of a pond. They call them ponds, but it was a large lake.

We paddled in the canoe and were treated to three moose sightings. They were standing in the water and eating the vegetation under the water. One even swam. It’s quite a sight to see this massive animal swimming across the lake! We also saw a family of loons, a bald eagle, and some river otters. Our guide was full of information and really made the trip more fun with all his jokes.
