Resort Experience:
I just got back from my first RCI adventure! Piney Shores on Lake Conroe in Texas. The staff member that checked us in was very thorough in his explanations of the resort and its amenities. He also pointed out some local attractions.
We were in a lodge. The rooms were a nice size. (We had a two-bed, two-bath room). The kitchen was small but fully equipped. It would have been nice to have an over-the-sink cutting board to add to meal preparation space, but then I don’t cook, so it wasn’t a big problem. The back patio area was great for the afternoon sun and quiet.
I did not travel with children, but the activities list for them was extensive. I saw young people using the archery equipment, in the pool, and playing volleyball and miniature golf. They also had movies during the day and evening for all ages. Horseback riding was on the premises, and the guides were excellent, as were the horses.
I personally first went to Old Town Spring, a wonderful town of shops of every type one could imagine. It was CRAWFISH FESTIVAL time, and they had crawfish available everywhere. The Blue Bonnet Café has the best chicken salad I have ever tasted.
Galveston is an easy drive and the Tour Train the best bargain in town. For an hour and a half, you get a guided tour of Galveston and are able to see not only the Strand (shopping), but also the historic sites in town.
We took a night out on the road and went to San Antonio via the Natural Caverns. The caverns were warm (to my amazement) and the tour was well done. I even "mined" for gems at the sluice and found a few. San Antonio’s Riverwalk has a well-deserved reputation for being magnificent, and the boat ride was fun. The Alamo was an experience I hope to share with my grandchildren when they get older.
It was an active schedule, but I don’t know when I’ll get to Texas again and wanted to see it all. Even the weather cooperated. It only rained at night. The only downside to this adventure was a problem with a radio in an adjacent unit that was on each night at 1am. It took three contacts with the resort staff to find one person who had a solution. To eliminate this potential, I would recommend a cabin instead of the lodge or get a room on the top floor.
Overall, it was a wonderful first experience, and I would recommend the resort highly.
