Where to Eat in Truckee

Overview

Of course, Truckee has its share of fast food restaurants (Burger King, KFC, Dairy Queen, Taco Bell, etc.) and pizza places. This journal will focus on less generic places to eat. Quick Tips: Truckee is rapidly becoming a "second home" to people from San Francisco and the extended Bay Area. They have brought with them the taste for sophisticated dining, but Truckee remains "mountain casual" in attitude. In every restaurant, neat casual attire is all that is seen. You can leave your coat and tie or dress and pantyhose at home if you are visiting here. Prices are climbing to match those in Bay Area restaurants but the quality of the dining experience is also climbing to meet higher expec...Read More

Pacific Crest Restaurant

Restaurant | "Pacific Crest"

Quote:
Located next door to the Bar of America on historic Commercial Row in downtown Truckee, Pacific Crest is both casual and classy. The tables are set with white tablecloths and service is efficient. It is open for lunch and dinner. Specialties include gourmet pizzas baked in a wood-fired oven, creative pastas and meat, fish and poultry with an Italian/French/Mediterranean accent. The seafood pastas are always a good choice for lunch or dinner. For lunch, I like the green salad with chicken, carmelized nuts and gorgonzola cheese. An unusual choice is the Thai chicken pizza, which is topped with chicken (of course), cilantro and pickled ginger! It's about 12" so it's a generous serving as a main di...Read More

Cottonwood Restaurant

Cottonwood is a Truckee institution. Located in a rustic mountain lodge at what was once a small ski area, it overlooks downtown Truckee and the peaks of the Donner Pass. A window table provides a romantic view at sunset in winter, as the Alpenglow turns the snow pink. Cottonwood is deservedly famous for its Caesar salad (the recipe is a not-very-well-kept secret among locals). What appears to be an entire head of Romaine lettuce is separated into individual leaves and dressed with the most killer-garlic dressing known to man. It is meant to be picked up, leaf by leaf, and eaten with the fingers. Another potential for a romantic event, if the garlic doesn't dampen the romance! The a...Read More

Truckee Trattoria

Once you enter this cozy restaurant, you forget you are in the Safeway shopping center. The owner-hostess welcomes you and seats you at a table covered in white cloth and with cloth napkins. The restaurant is open only for dinner, and not every night. It's best to call for a reservation because the place is popular with locals and visitors. On our last visit, I enjoyed wild mushroom ravioli in a reduced red wine sauce. It was light and full of flavor; exactly the effect I had hoped for. My husband had roast chicken in a similar red wine reduction. He was served a half a chicken, which would have provided enough to take home, but he thought it was so good, he finished it all at dinner. A ...Read More

Pianeta

Pianeta is the more upscale "cousin" to Pacific Crest, which is owned by the same people. It is open only for dinner. The interior features beautifully hand-painted walls, which suggest an Italian trattoria. The restaurant is on several levels, accessed by stairs. Service is warm and welcoming. As an appetizer, I enjoyed the grilled quail served on a bed of salad. Mushroom and herb agnolotti (small ravioli-like dumplings) in mushroom broth was a tasty and light appetizer one evening. Bruscetta topped with eggplant tapenade was also good. The menu has a variety of pasta dishes, including a simple but delicious spaghetti with marinara sauce and meatballs. I thought the braised duck with...Read More

Altos Restaurant (Los)

Restaurant | "Los Altos"

Quote:
There are several Mexican restaurants in Truckee, but Los Altos is my favorite, for both food and atmosphere. This storefront restaurant is located in the Albertson's-Long's shopping center, just off Hwy 89 South. The decor is rustic, with wooden booths and casual tables with paper placemats. The feeling is that this is a family-run restaurant, which it is. The service staff is friendly, but can be a bit harried when the place is packed, as it often is on weekends. You may have to wait at the bar until a table is available, but the chips and salsa are fresh and the margaritas are good. The menu has the full range of "traditional" Mexican resturant fare, with a homemade taste. The taco she...Read More

Dragonfly

Restaurant

Quote:
Dragonfly is Truckee's newest restaurant and features an Asian-fusion cuisine. The room is small, although the deck will allow for extra tables in warm weather. At lunch, tables are mostly unadorned. At dinner, they are dressed with white tablecloths, and heavy metal napkin rings in the shape of a dragonfly encircle the cloth napkins. On the lunch menu, the falafel are very good. They are served with an interesting yogurt sauce, garnished with baby greens and drizzled with Dragonfly's version of hummus. The Vietnamese noodle bowl ($8), which is supposed to be a cross between French onion soup and Vietnamese pho was less successful. It had plenty of carmelized onions, but the combi...Read More
