Buzios - Perfect Post-Carnival Wind-Down

A February 2005 trip to Buzios by Amaj

Quote: A beautiful peninsula wih over 20 gorgeous beaches (each with something different to offer), good restaurants, a varied nightlife, quaint cobbled streets, and only 3 hours from Rio by bus, this is the ideal place to come to chill out after the craziness of Carnival.

Buzios - Perfect Post-Carnival Wind-Down

Overview

Quote:
The perfect way to get from beach to beach is in a dune buggy, which you can rent for about £25 per day. The one we had was pretty knackered but still really good fun! Praia Tartaruga - Lovely, calm waters make a nice change from the crazy waves found on most of the other beaches. Chill out by the water and eat - there's some good food on offer here. Lots of fresh fish are barbecued right in front of you. Praia Geriba - This is where the surfers hang out. It's picturesque, but the waves are pretty big, so not the best for swimming. However, it's the perfect place to head for the sunset. There are DJ bars, caipirinhas galore, and it gets pretty packed. Quick Tips: If you are takin...Read More

We got off the bus that had driven us from Rio de Janeiro at about half past 9pm. We had made tentative reservations at the YHA youth hostel, so we jumped in a taxi and asked the driver to take us there. Relieved at the thought of finally being able to take a shower and go out and get some dinner, we entered. Not only was the staff unfriendly, but this place was truly a dive. One look at the bedroom was enough for us all to start panicking. We hit the road again, praying that we’d be able to find somewhere better. Fortunately, pousadas (small guesthouses a bit like B&Bs) line the streets of Buzios. There are plenty of them; all you have to do is take your pick. Walking down a side street near...Read More

We thought we'd check out Nikki Beach Buzios because we had been to Nikki Beach Miami and loved it - great vibe, great music. Nikki Beach Buzios is quite different, though - for a start, there is no beach, although the pool area is lovely. And although it claimed to have a DJ from 5-10pm, when we turned up for dinner at 7pm, they were playing Whitney Houston and other cheesy pop tunes. While we waited to order, we had a cocktail - they have a really good selection. We tried a few different ones, and they all tasted amazing. The food was quite varied - they have a sushi menu but also another menu of more substantial dishes from all around the world. I had a monkfish ceviche to start, whi...Read More

This is a beautiful, small beach quite close to the centre of town. Park your buggy in the small car park and walk down to the beach. The sand is golden, but not the white sand of the Rio beaches, and really soft. The water here is incredibly calm and clear, so it is perfect for swimming. Quiet and relaxed, this beach is not overly packed. Lounge on one of the sun loungers that one of the restaurants here has to offer – the only condition is that you have to buy your refreshments from that particular establishment. We chose one with an outdoor barbecue and a particularly friendly waiter who spoke really good English. After we had created a bit of an appetite by swimming in the w...Read More

Praia de Geriba

Attraction

Come down here early on in the day and you’ll see an exceptionally pretty beach with an amazing setting. It’s a long strip of sand, and the sea here has got quite large waves, so it is very popular for surfing, but probably not so good for swimming, unless you’re quite a strong swimmer. You can rent deckchairs and umbrellas for not too much money. Come back again later in the day, and you’ll find that the beach is heaving – you’ll have to search hard to find a space to put your towel. The people are all young and hip, and as the sun gradually sets, music blares out from the bars and restaurants that have set up shop on this beach and people start the evening by drinking here. It’s a very sociable...Read More

Like me, you may be initially a bit dubious about eating in one of the by-the-kilo restaurants that are so numerous in Brazil, simply because common experience of buffet food in England is mostly bad. School dinners, for example, or work canteens where the chips are cold, often include overprocessed meat, and everything's slightly overcooked. It did look quite cheap though, and after our 3-hour-long bus ride to Buzios from Rio, we were all pretty starving, and were quite excited about the prospect of a plate piled high with food. You take a token as you go in and then pick up a plate, load it up with as much food as you want, and there's pretty much anything you might want to eat here, ra...Read More
