A weekend in Tangier

A December 2000 trip to Tangier by Columbus

Taking advantage of a visit to Madrid we decided to fly to Tangier (Tanger for the locals)and be exposed to a different culture. And a different culture we found. So close to Europe and so different from the western civilization

We did not want to take any chances, so we booked the best hotel in town, "El Minzah" and they got a private guide for us. The exchange rate was to our advantage. The first day, we took on the Medina or old section of town.

Quick Tips:

With our guide we went the second day to the American, English and Spanish sections of town. 14 km west from Tangier we visited Cape Spartale, the most NW point of Africa. Nearby is the famous Grottes d'Hercules, seaformed caves.

Best Way To Get Around:

Near the hotel walking is interesting but the crowds are big. No driving is recomended except with local guides where you can visit the surrounding areas.

The rooms facing the beach and port have a rate for a double of $160 but they go down on weekends to $79 including Tax per night/double. Nice view fom your room of the bay with confortable beds and a recently renovated bathroom. This building used to be a Palace prior to being taken by the Occidental chain.

Superb Moroccan style food. Couscus and lamb along with seafood are the most common plates. In particular the lamb is very tender and juicy and prepared with prunes giving a semi-sweet flavor. Service excellent, floor show on weekends with local music, including a belly dancer.

A very nice restaurant on a second floor with typical spanish food. Soups are delicious and the seafood paella was prepared with different ingredients. Place was not crowded and the service was good. House wine was cheap and good.

Attraction

Very busy, bargaining is a way of shopping in Morroco. It is difficult to buy with no price tags. Keep a sense of humor, be polite, keep accepting mint tea whenever it's offered. Never show that you are in love with an item.
Good luck!
