Great 2-week trip to Cancun/Riviera Maya and Playa del Carmen! Condo/transport/dining/shopping/touring info.

In Cancun, use the city bus--65 pesos per trip, no matter how long. Tell the driver where you want to go in a short phrase, i.e. "Sr. Frog's," then hang on and sit down.

Outside of Cancun (Riviera Maya/Playa), get a rental car. I went online the week we were in Cancun and rented through Costco and picked up at the Hilton. It was approximately /day for a four-door stick shift with A/C. The hotel wanted /day. We had much more fun eating and roaming in Playa than being stuck at the hotel. Cab fare to Playa was one-way, and we were glad we did not have to stand on the side of the highway in the dark to wait for the bus. The ride from the Mayan Palce was 15-20 minutes. It also allowed us to explore the water parks and Tulum.

Have a fun day at Xel-Ha (shell ha), snorkel the lagoon, or spend all day in the water if you want. There are cenotes, a rope swing, a diving cliff, and swimming with the dolphins. If you plan on staying all day, get the all-inclusive for food and drinks (including beer, drinks, and ice cream), towels, lockers, and snorkeling equipment. There are five or six restaurants and plenty of gift shops. You need biodegradable sun tan lotion--they hold yours and give you a small pack in exchange (you get yours back when you leave).

X-Caret is another fun park. Float the rivers, swim the lagoon, snorkel, see the animals, visit the aquarium, and swim with the dolphins. There are a lot of extras when you're in the park, and you have to rent snorkel gear, etc. We brought snorkeling equipment and towels. I didn't see any all-inclusive here. STAY FOR THE NIGHTTIME SHOW, done very well and professionally. We paid each for dinner, including small appetizer, salad, main dish, and dessert, plus two drinks. The show lasts till 9ish. We thought it was worth it.

Explore some beaches near Tulum, go to Cozumel for the day, and include a snorkeling tour there, for 3 hours.

Quick Tips:

Groceries and supplies in Cancun - Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, Costco, Chederaux. Take the bus in and take a cab home (cab to our condo was ).

Don't let the solicitations bother you. Just say "No, thanks." Ask for the check at the restaurant, and they'll let you hang out forever.

Take small bills--lots of , , etc. If you pay with a large bill (dollars), they like to give you change in pesos. We exchanged fairly small amounts of money at the condo, and their exchange rate was good.

Book your transportation from the airport to the condo/hotel prior to leaving. I paid /person. The airport is a complete zoo! From the hotel to the airport, a cab costs . You really do need the two hours before your flight just to find the end of the line for your airline.

Have fun!

Best Way To Get Around:

Bus, bus, bus. They will give you change. 65 pesos/person (.65). Get some coins from the hotel/condo. Get on, pay, tell them where you want to go (short phrase, not too much talkie, talkie), and HANG ON! The buses are reasonably clean and not scary.

Outside of Cancun, I would get a car. We weren't sure until we got there, so I just booked online while we were there and picked up at a different hotel.

Best Things Nearby:
Located in Zona Hotelera, the bus is steps away from the resort entrance, with easy access to Zona and Centro.

Best Things About the Resort:
Smaller resort, very nicely maintained. Friendly service and true condo accommodations with a full kitchen. We had a first-floor unit facing the pool with a partial ocean view. Nice lanai to sit on for breakfast or beverages. The unit location would have been great if you had young kids for pool access, napping, feeding, etc. Freebies included use of their snorkel equipment, tennis rackets, towels. Nice laundry facilities. Polite and respectful service, restaurant cooked our fish for 60 pesos ($6) per person. Happy hour from 3-6pm daily. Shuttle available to other Royal resorts and restaurants--check out the Sands for the beach and pool (get towels there). Would go back in a minute, even a Mexican Minute--check it out!

Resort Experience:
A relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Good service with easy access to the bus system--go out the front and walk a few steps to your left for the bus stop. Easy to find, right near the biggest Mexican flag. Easy to go to Cancun Centro for shopping, Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, and Costco. Take the bus there, shop, and take cab back ($6 for the cab, $0.65 each for the bus). Immediately help when we returned with the groceries. They also have a well-stocked Mercado (market) right on the premises, where prices are higher for the convenience.

The resort is cash-free - everything is charged to your room, but you use your room key like a credit card and sign for all charges. I thought that was more secure than just providing your room number and name. The card also works at all the other Royal resorts and restaurants. You get a small discount at the restaurants too. Check the free shuttle schedule, as the shuttles are a little nicer than the city bus.

Best Things Nearby:
Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, water parks, ruins, cenotes. GET A CAR!

Best Things About the Resort:
Well, where to start. THE POOL(S) are the best thing about the resort! The units are huge--one room was a one-bedroom with two separate sinks, a large living room, and kitchenette. The other bedroom is actually a connecting hotel room with two beds and a full bath.

Resort Experience:
This resort is large and disorganized as a result of not being finished. The staff, maids, valets, luggage handlers are a little confused. It took them a while to find our car. They did not understand which luggage to store and which to leave in the car. They were still cleaning the room at 5:45pm, missed cleaning one day, and made up one entire bedroom a couple of days later. The furniture and couches are really, really firm--don't try to bounce, or you will be in pain.

We did did find the food there to be particularing good. The best food is at the pool snack bar. They fumigate in the afternoon, and I mean fumigate with a gas-type blower that emits thick, smelly we-don't-know-what, but we cannot understand why they do it at 7pm. The pool and grounds are maintained during the day, so I don't get it. Bathrooms at the pool need better service. The games and activities at the pool are amusing. Happy hour is from 11am till noon--what's up with that? There's an expensive boutique and easy Internet access for $7/hour. Great security when entering and exiting with your vehicle. As the resort is not an all-inclusive (and the pickin's are slim), I would probably go back to avoid the all-inclusive fee.
