While staying in a resort in Cocoa Beach, my husband and I discovered Jack Baker's on the Banana River!

We decided to try this local restaurant after reading a review in Space Coast magazine. What a nice surprise. The restaurant is a large, sprawling building on an inland waterway called the Banana River. We arrived at just about 6pm, and their huge parking lot was packed (a good omen, I thought). We entered over a quaint humpy-bridge that had a koi fish pond below and dispensers where you could buy fish food for them. Once inside, we discovered a rustic, vibrant atmosphere and a multi-level building which was much larger than outside appearances suggested. We gave our names and were given a pager and then began exploring. There was a lovely little lounge area to wait in and a downstairs bar where we could sit and have a drink. Outside, the sun was sinking over the water and was deep magenta over beautiful blue water. We walked out down a lovely narrow pier and took some pics. They have a large outdoor patio where lots of people were dining (so romantic!).

In about 30 minutes, we were 'buzzed' and shown to our table. Everything about the place is comfortable, with barnboard floors, lots of interesting levels and rooms. But wait; I haven't gotten to the food yet. You could choose from a varied menu of seafood and good old American dishes and combine them with a large salad buffet if you wished. We had a great waitress, 'Stephanie', who brought our drinks and a basket of hot 'hush puppies'--they were a type of cornmeal fritter in sugar and so delicious. The meals we chose had lots of shrimp and crab. I think my husband had a steak, and we both thought we had made excellent choices. Our waitress was very attentive and conversational. We will go there again and next time will go a bit earlier and perhaps make reservations. I want to dine outside on that gorgeous patio next time! This may be a chain restaurant, and if so, I will keep their name in mind wherever we travel. If you want casual, yet somehow sophisticated, then this is the place for you.
