Grand Blanc - a small town with lots of class

An April 2005 trip to Grand Blanc by Bethany Davidson-Widby

Grand Blanc, a small suburb of Flint, Michigan, makes up in class what it lacks in size. Home to the PGA Buick Open, there are great shops and restaurants to explore and enjoy.

If you're looking for a great bite to eat, head to Kruse and Muer Grand Blanc, located in the Grand Mall. This elite chain of restaurants, founded by Chuck Muer and Bill Kruse in the late 1980s, has achieved a level of excellence. While Chuck Muer was tragically lost at sea, Bill Kruse has carried on the legacy of greatness.

With such tempting daily specials, it's hard to choose just one. My choice? The coconut-encrusted grouper. The grouper was so amazing, and tasted like honey as it melted in my mouth. It was accompanied by lightly pan-fried rice mixed with apples, cantelope, and a variety of other fruits.

Each entree is accompanied by their special coleslaws, one a creamy horseradish, the other a lime-mint vinegarette. You can choose to upgrade to a side salad of garden greens, pineapple, dried cherries, and golden raisins, tossed in the lime-mint vinegarette.

The wine list is impressive, and the bar is extensive. If you're not sure what to choose, the waitstaff and managers and knowledgeable about wine pairings.

Not in the mood to get all dressed up? Jeans are acceptable, but you'll probably want to leave your sweats at home.

Enjoy!
