Quote: Marshall is an East Texas town with a rich heriatge and a sense of fun and humor. What other town would go all out with a series of festivals that celebrate their Stagecoach history, Christmas, and of all things - the Fire Ant?? Stop on in and see.

Marshall is a great little town off of I-20 that offers some great things to see and do while you're there. Probably the biggest and most well known event happens between Thanksgiving and Christmas and the townspeople go all out. The Wonderland of Lights is an awesome thing, not just to see, but experience. The downtown area is bedecked with over 1000 miles of lights in dazzling displays, an ice skating rink is brought in, and the town pitches in as tour guides and helpers. Christmas got you down? One visit and you might believe in Santa again. Another event is the one and only Fire Ant Festival. Whoever heard of a festival all about a pest? It's lots of crazy fun watching the Fire Ant calling contest...Read More

The Holiday Inn Express in Marshall was brand spanking new when we stayed there, so everything was immaculate. Hard to complain about fresh sheets, new furniture and beds, and a pool that had seen less than 100 swimmers. The staff was friendly and very helpful with suggestions and directions to various sites and stores that we needed (or wanted) to visit. Fortunately, they have laundry facilities at the hotel (since I needed them after spilling a shake on myself in the car). The hotel serves a nice continental breakfast complete with fruit, dounuts and sweet rolls, yogurt, cereals, coffee, juices, and milk. The breakfast crew was courteous and didn''t mind coming by with coffee refills. All in all, it...Read More

The Best Western in Marshall is a nice stop if your headed across I-20 and don''t want to pay the weekend-inflated (due to the casinos) prices in Shreveport. The hotel is fairly new and quite clean and comfortable. The pool was a welcome sight to our kids after a long day in the car, while the comfy beds caught my attention and proved to be a good place to unwind with a quick nap before dinner. The staff was gracious and made our stay a nice one. In the morning, I took advantage of the in-room coffee maker to fill my thermos as we prepared to go our way.

The only problem with staying in a hotel that serves a breakfast is that it makes it harder to convince my wife that we need to go to the Waffle House. Now, once inside she agrees that it's a good move, but until then she is just trying to save a little money (one of the dozens of reasons I love her!). The Waffle House (in my humble opinion) makes the best pecan waffle that you will ever put in your mouth. Light, golden brown waffle, loaded with southern pecans, spead with creamy whipped butter, and drizzled with maple syrup - got your mouth watering yet? Every time I'm tempted to get 2, but I know that if I do, I won't have room for their wonderful hash browns. Hash browns are the other specialty at ...Read More

As I said in the overview, the Wonderland of Lights Festival is Marshall's biggest and most well-known event of the year. Thousands come for the guided bus tours, or (do as we did) to just walk through downtown Marshall and view the spectacular light display. This beats any Christmas light drive-through park I've ever been to because the town is alive with Christmastime wonder. You can ice skate under the lights in the town square, sip hot cocoa and listen to the local choirs that sing carols to the multitudes of visitors, or take the kids to see St. Nick himself. There are animated displays, shapes and designs of all types and sizes, and on the first Saturday in December, there is even a lighted Chri...Read More

Marshall Old World Pottery is a shopper's paradise. If it is made with clay or has to do with working in your kitchen, you'll probably find it here. Pots and bowls of all shapes and sizes, plates, mugs, pitchers, flower pots, and crocks line the building. There is a Christmas store with all kinds of unique ornaments and display items, a silk flower shop, a bookstore, a shop with artwork, a kitchen utensil shop, and all this is under one roof. Outside are the large (and I mean LARGE) terracotta pots and there is a snack shop too. If you're in luck, you'll be able to see the master potters at work with the clay on the wheels. The artisans are truly mezmerizing as they manipulate the lumps of clay into ...Read More
