My husband and I booked a package tour from Dallas to Jamaica. Though I’m not the nervous type when it comes to traveling, even I had my doubts as to how much I would enjoy this island. Our hotel was all-inclusive in as much as they provided breakfast and dinner. However, it was a family-owned, family-run resort. It was not gated like Sandals, Beaches, etc. The plane landed near Montego Bay, and within minutes, my husband had been offered drugs by both the airport security guard and the local taxi driver. Needless to say, he declined their kind offer. Like sheep, we followed the tour rep to our transport bus. The trip to Negril took a couple of hours. This had other travelers compla...Read More

We did book this as a package tour from Dallas, but we wanted to avoid the all-inclusive gated communities all over Jamaica. These hotels are great for some people, but whilst we were nervous on our first trip to Jamaica, we were also anxious to see something of the local island and culture. The Merrils Beach resorts are a great balance. It’s indeed all inclusive, so you do get the buffet dinners each night, but it’s also locally owned and run. Merrils doesn’t have the big gates and set-back properties. This is right off the main road running through Negril. There is a gate with security guard, but it’s never closed and the guard offered us drugs. However, unlike the gated communities, there were not ...Read More

Juici Patties

Juici Patties is the Jamaican version of McDonald’s. They are everywhere. These little stores are all over and easily recognizable with big bright-red letters spelling Juici Patties on an equally as bright yellow background. During lunchtime hours, there will be lines of people coming out the doors, but you won’t see many tourists there. This serves the local filling lunch for the working men and families. The patty resembles an English Cornish pasty, with a pastry shell stuffed full of meat, fish, and vegetables depending on which one you order. I particularly liked the curry-vegetables one, but I also tried the chicken. The two I liked had hot curry sauce and a mix of the very hot Scotch bonnet ...Read More

We came here for the drinking and partying. It’s more than a dining experience, but the menu looked quite extensive, with all the usual burgers and surf and turf, as well as snapper, tuna, and local fish. The drinks were good and not too expensive considering this bar is a tourist trap. Live reggae music was a nice touch, and as the evening wore on and the tourists drank more, it became a full-fledged dance floor. Don't expect to meet many locals here; this place is THE party spot in Negril for the holiday-makers. SEE HERE. The only locals we saw here were those jumping the 40 feet off the cliffs into the crystal waters below. They were young boys and ...Read More

Mo. Bay....NO WAY

Story/Tip

Quote:
Before going to Jamaica, I had this picture in my head of this perfect little beach that I would see photos of as a kid. It turns out this beach was the Dr. Caves beach in Montego Bay. On booking this holiday, we had been torn between staying in Negril and Montego Bay, and in the end picked Negril, which turned out to be a great experience. By the time our holiday came to an end, we had been all over the island, but not yet to Montego Bay. Our return transfer got us to the airport with three hours to spare so, on a whim, we decided to stroll into Montego Bay and see it finally. It would have been quicker to have taken a taxi, but at this point we didn’t have any money left and weren’t going to bo...Read More

Black River and YS Fallas

Black River tour Photo - Negril, Jamaica
Quote:
This was a day trip that we booked from our hotel reception and included a boat tour of the Black River--lunch at a beach bar and a trip to the Y.S. Falls. We heard these were less touristy than the Dunn’s River Falls--and with other events, this was certainly the better value for our money. The whole day was planned in tour group fashion. The mini-bus picked us up from our hotel and drove along the south coast to the Black River, where we all got off and piled into a "Safari Empress" boat and began our river tour. The local guide was funny and full of amusing little stories, but the tour was like many similar ones where they take you looking for crocodiles and seem to know exactly where to look, yet...Read More

We were introduced to Daddy Coo by people at the hotel who knew of him. However, as I came to find out, EVERYONE in Negril knows Daddy Coo, who is something of a local celebrity, so it should be easy for you to track him down too. Daddy Coo and his wife actually own and run some cottages/hostels in Negril. Hes a full Rasta and wears his hair in dreads and the long, flowing clothes. More than this physical appearance, though, Daddy Coo had the laid-back, intelligent, nature-loving personality that is the true Rasta lifestyle. They are a very educated and peace-loving people. Daddy Coo took us on a very small personal tour of his favourite areas of Negril. This tour ended up visiting his friends' homes,...Read More
