Overview

I lived in Evergreen for 10 years prior to my move to the “lowlands” of Denver, and I miss it still. Having the great outdoors in my backyard (read: grazing elk and deer), along with the unique shopping and dining opportunities the community offers, were only some of its charms. You will find that the drive to the mountain town of Evergreen is, in itself, well worth the trip. Don’t pack your camera in the trunk. Along the way, you will pass by the “home where the buffalo roam”—Exit 254 on Interstate 70 West, to be specific. Here, you will usually spy numerous heads of buffalo grazing along the open range that runs along the freeway. If I were a gambling woman (which, in fact, I am--but tha...Read More

Beau Jo's Pizza

Restaurant

Quote:
A visit to Beau Jo’s is a “must” for any pizza lover. Travelocity named this local pizza chain a “Top Ten Local Secrets, Big Finds” in 2005. When we first moved to Colorado in 1986, there was only one location, so we eagerly made the trip to Idaho Springs, Colorado to indulge in what may be the most decadent pizza in the world. Of course, that’s a matter of taste—but at Beau Jo’s you build your own pizza, so you can design it for your individual taste preferences. Today, there are a total of six Beau Jo restaurants in Colorado, one of which is in downtown Evergreen, at 28186 Highway 74. The phone number is 303-670-2744 and the website is www.beaujos.com. Not all that hungry? Just order an ap...Read More

El Rancho

Visit El Rancho Restaurant on your way to or from Evergreen, Colorado. Although its official address is given as "Golden, Colorado," the restaurant is located just to the right after you exit Interstate 70 onto Evergreen Parkway when coming from Denver. The restaurant offers the ambience of a log cabin, combined with panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains. In the winter, you can warm up in front of a blazing fire set in a huge stone fireplace--perhaps while sipping a hot toddy or a wine from the restaurant’s extensive wine list. In the summer, enjoy the same wine selection on the deck along with fabulous views of the Continental Divide. The restaurant is open daily for both lunch and di...Read More

Attraction | "Evergreen Public Golf Course"

Quote:
The Evergreen Golf Course is located on the southwest side of Evergreen Lake on Upper Bear Creek Road. Although located in Evergreen, the course is owned and managed by Denver Parks and Recreation. The course itself is beautiful, with large pine trees and rolling greens and fairways. Add to that the views of the mountains and the lakes and... well, you get the picture. One thing that some golfers may find lacking is the absence of any long holes. All the holes are either Par 3 or Par 4, but the challenge of this course lies in the fact that there are many blind holes. As an example, on one particular Par 3 hole, a huge boulder is situated in front of the tee box such that you can’t see the g...Read More

Quote:
Okay, I admit it. I had never heard of The Little Bear when I first moved to Colorado. But when people learned that I was living in Evergreen, one of the first questions they asked was, “Have you been to The Little Bear?” I felt compelled to check it out and highly recommend the experience to most—as long as you are open-minded. It well deserves its reputation as one of the rowdiest mountain bars, but in a fun—rather than an intimidating—way.Located right smack in the middle of downtown Evergreen, The Little Bear is reminiscent of one of the Old West saloons, from the wooden sidewalk in front of it to its very rustic interior. The building that was once a chur...Read More

Evergreen Lake

The jewel of Evergreen, in my mind, is Evergreen Lake. This beautiful little mountain lake provides a setting for numerous activities, including nature walks, fishing, boating, and ice skating. The lake is stocked with trout for year-round fishing. In the summer, rental boats (no motors allowed) are available. One of my favorite features, however, is the 1.5 mile walking path that encircles the lake. It is an easy walk for the most part, but be forewarned that there are a number of steep steps leading to the base of the dam, and what goes down must come up. A pretty little garden area with several sculptures lies below the dam. Bridges and boardwalks lead you through wildlife wetlands on the northwest...Read More

Hiwan Homestead Museum Photo, Denver, Colorado
Quote:
Hiwan Homestead Museum was always at the top of my list to take visitors when I lived in Evergreen, and all of them, regardless of their individual interests and backgrounds, really enjoyed this short tour. The museum is actually a 17-room log mansion, built in 1890, with additions added through 1930. Knowledgeable volunteer guides narrate the history of this original mountain summer home, which is a cornerstone in the history of the town of Evergreen. The “mansion” showcases interesting architectural features as well as a Native American Collection and a World Doll Collection. On the grounds are other buildings, including the “Children’s House,” that visitors may tour. I...Read More

Downtown Evergreen

Historic downtown Evergreen offers a trove of pleasures for the shopper in you. The main thoroughfare shops have diverse offerings, ranging from antiques, art, hand-thrown pottery, quality clothing, Indian jewelry, and German treasures to second-hand clothing and furnishings and souvenirs. Park anywhere along Highway 74 (the main thoroughfare) or in the parking lot described in the overview and enjoy window shopping, at the very least. I am not myself an ardent shopper, but a couple of the shops of downtown Evergreen lure even me to return again and again. For a unique gift for that special someone, I look first in Evergreen Crafters at 28115 Highway 74 (just steps from The Little Bear.) Her...Read More

Maxwell Falls Hike

Attraction

Maxwell Falls Hike Photo, Evergreen, Colorado
Quote:
One of the prettiest hikes in Evergreen is the Maxwell Falls trail, which parallels Maxwell Creek to the Falls. The Falls, while modest in size, are nonetheless an impressive sight as water tumbles down a canyon of massive rock cliffs. I highly recommend packing a lunch. It’s easy to make yourself comfortable atop one of the rock outcrops and enjoy your picnic, serenaded by the sound of rushing water. Spring and early summer are usually the best times to enjoy this hike since the creek can become dry in the heat of the late summer months. However, I also like to take this hike in the autumn when the fall colors are spectacular. To reach the trailhead, turn south off of Highway 74 onto...Read More

Alderfer/Three Sisters Park

Attraction

Quote:
One of the things I miss about not living in Evergreen anymore is being able to relieve my stress by pulling on my hiking boots and heading to a nearby trail. Only a couple of miles from my home, The Three Sisters was one of my favorite places to unload and was ideal for a short outing when my time was limited. Alderfer/Three Sisters Park consists of 770 acres of open space. The defining feature of this park is four massive rock formations known as “The Three Sisters” and “The Brother.” While there are over 12 miles of trail that will lead you to The Three Sisters and over to The Brother, the round trip hike to The Sisters is about 4.9 miles. A round trip hike to Br...Read More

Want to say you climbed a fourteener while in Colorado but just don’t have the energy? Then a trip to Mount Evans is your answer. The summit, at 14,130 feet above sea level, is accessed by a drive up the highest paved automobile road in North America. And if you feel bad about saying you climbed to the summit when you actually rode in a car, you can hike another 130 feet from the parking lot to Mt. Evans highest point at 14,264 feet. The scenery is nothing short of spectacular along the way, and there are numerous places to pull off the road to enjoy the absolutely breathtaking views, have a picnic, or stretch your legs with a short walk along a well-beaten path. Mule deer, mountain goats, and Rocky M...Read More
