A December 2005 trip
to Denver by mplunkert
Quote: Less than an hour's drive from downtown Denver, Evergreen offers a variety of activities that will satisfy the outdoorsman, the shopper, and the party animal.
A visit to Beau Jo’s is a “must” for any pizza lover. Travelocity named this local pizza chain a “Top Ten Local Secrets, Big Finds” in 2005. When we first moved to Colorado in 1986, there was only one location, so we eagerly made the trip to Idaho Springs, Colorado to indulge in what may be the most decadent pizza in the world. Of course, that’s a matter of taste—but at Beau Jo’s you build your own pizza, so you can design it for your individual taste preferences.
Today, there are a total of six Beau Jo restaurants in Colorado, one of which is in downtown Evergreen, at 28186 Highway 74. The phone number is 303-670-2744 and the website is www.beaujos.com. Not all that hungry? Just order an appetizer. Prices range from $2.99 for chips and salsa to $9.99 for a large order of buffalo wings. At Beau Jo’s, you design your own pizza, and the pricing is by the pound. A standard cheese 1-pounder pizza (6 slices) costs $6.49. Each additional veggie is $1.09, and each additional meat or cheese ordered is $1.59. For those counting calories or watching their cholesterol intake, Beau Jo’s also offers health-conscious selections, such as a low fat/low cholesterol pizza on a thin crust.

Visit El Rancho Restaurant on your way to or from Evergreen, Colorado. Although its official address is given as "Golden, Colorado," the restaurant is located just to the right after you exit Interstate 70 onto Evergreen Parkway when coming from Denver. The restaurant offers the ambience of a log cabin, combined with panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains. In the winter, you can warm up in front of a blazing fire set in a huge stone fireplace--perhaps while sipping a hot toddy or a wine from the restaurant’s extensive wine list. In the summer, enjoy the same wine selection on the deck along with fabulous views of the Continental Divide. The restaurant is open daily for both lunch and dinner. Appetizer offerings run the gamut from rabbit and rattlesnake sausage for $7 to elk and buffalo wontons for $8 to a $14 appetizer sampler. Salads cost anywhere from $2 to $7. The menu, which includes trout, elk, and buffalo dishes, offers chicken enchiladas for $13 (least expensive item) and a mixed grill of elk medallions, fillet mignon and rabbit and rattlesnake sausage for $27 (most expensive item.)
El Rancho advertises an early-bird dinner from 5-6pm Monday through Friday and 3-5pm on Sunday at the special price of $15. Other bonus features include a gift shop, a totally smoke-free experience, and free WiFi. I have stopped here for drinks and appetizers a couple of times and have also dined here a couple of times. The ambience is exceptional and the cuisine is unique, but, unfortunately, both the food preparation and the service have been inconsistent in my experience. Hopefully, if you decide to stop, both will be superb!

Attraction | "Evergreen Public Golf Course"
The Evergreen Golf Course is located on the southwest side of Evergreen Lake on Upper Bear Creek Road. Although located in Evergreen, the course is owned and managed by Denver Parks and Recreation. The course itself is beautiful, with large pine trees and rolling greens and fairways. Add to that the views of the mountains and the lakes and... well, you get the picture.
One thing that some golfers may find lacking is the absence of any long holes. All the holes are either Par 3 or Par 4, but the challenge of this course lies in the fact that there are many blind holes. As an example, on one particular Par 3 hole, a huge boulder is situated in front of the tee box such that you can’t see the green. Therefore, at the edge of the green, a large bell is mounted on a pole. When a group leaves the green, they ring the bell to let the next group know that it is all clear for them to tee off. The course also offers its own unique obstacles--an occasional deer or elk may get in the way of your shot. The green fees are relatively inexpensive. At this writing, nine holes cost $12 on Mondays through Thursdays and $14 on weekends and holidays. Cart rentals are $8 and club rentals are $10, regardless of the day. Eighteen holes will cost you $19 on Mondays through Thursdays and $23 on weekends and holidays. Carts rentals for 18 holes are $13 and club rentals are $18. The clubhouse, also known as “Keys on the Green,” is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Both the food and the views are exceptional. For reservations and/or more information, call the Proshop at (303) 674-6351.

Historic downtown Evergreen offers a trove of pleasures for the shopper in you. The main thoroughfare shops have diverse offerings, ranging from antiques, art, hand-thrown pottery, quality clothing, Indian jewelry, and German treasures to second-hand clothing and furnishings and souvenirs. Park anywhere along Highway 74 (the main thoroughfare) or in the parking lot described in the overview and enjoy window shopping, at the very least. I am not myself an ardent shopper, but a couple of the shops of downtown Evergreen lure even me to return again and again.
For a unique gift for that special someone, I look first in Evergreen Crafters at 28115 Highway 74 (just steps from The Little Bear.) Here, I can find anything from a moderately priced piece of distinctive jewelry, pottery, or artwork to a souvenir mug or T-shirt. Village Casuals is in the same building and offers an exceptional selection of casual clothing for women. I don’t know where its buyer shops, but I do know that I have yet to see similar clothing anywhere in the area. Prices range from moderate to high-priced. Victoria Halls Gifts and Candles at 27995 Highway 74 is the all-round basic gift shop, carrying items such as music boxes, figurines, candles, and porcelain dolls. If you are seeking a truly exceptional artistic gift, I recommend a visit to The Evergreen Gallery, located right at the stop light in downtown Evergreen. Over 90 artists’ work are featured in this gallery. Here you will find that unusual piece of pottery, jewelry, stained glass, or sculpture to satisfy the most persnickety on your shopping list. The Gallery also sells original paintings and limited-edition prints.
