Weekend in Napflion

We spent a weekend in Nafplion during a 2-week stay in Greece, which included visits to Santorini, Mykonos, Athens, Kalamata, and Athens. Nafplion remains one of our favorites, and we would love to go back!

Highlights included walking up and down the narrow cobblestone streets, meeting and talking to friendly locals, staying at the gracious Hotel Ilion (also called Ilion Suites), eating delicious Greek food, and visiting Tolo Beach.

Best Way To Get Around:

You can't drive around this town easily. After you check in, park your car at the port and use your feet to get around.

What a wonderful place to stay! Our family of four reserved a two-story apartment with a huge balcony that had incredible views of the town below, the sea, and the forts on the hills above. You could sit on that balcony for hours, day and night. The view was heavenly. The apartment had a small kitchenette, too. The apartment was located amidst narrow, hilly cobblestone streets in a residential neighborhood, so we really got a flavor for the town.

The employees were so kind and so friendly. We had been travelling in Europe for 10 days, and they did all of our laundry for us. It was folded neatly in our room when we returned, and they only charged us 20 euros.

Make your reservations in advance. They don't have a lot of rooms. We would go back in a heartbeat!

Our dining experience here was wonderful! We sat in a narrow cobblestone alleyway outside the taverna under a canopy of bougainvillea. Three musicians played bouzouki music while we dined under the stars. The service was friendly, and the food was outstanding. We had a 9pm reservation since were there on a weekend, and it was crowded.

Tolo has a beautiful white-sand beach and crystal-clear blue waters. There are vendors who set up cushioned chaises and umbrellas for you (you pay them a minimal fee), and you're set for the day. Get there early on the weekends if you want to be in the first row by the sea.

We walked down the beach a bit and bought Greek salads and burgers from a beachside café.

There was a variety of boating equipment to rent. We chose a paddle boat for our family of four and ventured out to a tiny island out in the bay. There was a path that led up to a little chapel, but we spent our time jumping off a big rock into the blue water.

Spending the day in Tolo is relaxing and gorgeous.

You can be completely entertained just walking up and down the cobblestone streets of this quaint town. There are so many small cafes and tavernas for meals and snacks. There are lots of shops--from the kitschy souvenirs to upscale, quality arts and crafts. The variety is huge, especially considering the small size of this charming community. If you feel adventurous, you can climb the steps to the ancient fortress for an amazing view. Otherwise, a walk along the seaside port is refreshing and relaxing. The views in every direction offer many photo ops. When you get tired of walking, shopping, and eating, head over to Tolo Beach for a sun-drenched day of swimming, sunbathing, and watersports. It's only a 15-minute drive. Don't miss this beautiful seaside town!
