The Romantic and Clean Zacatecas

A March 2005 trip to Zacatecas by Rocky Mt. High

Quote: Walk in the evening and you'll likely find a gentleman with a donkey hauling large Tequila flasks strapped to its back, passing out free shots. The city has a world-class museum, complete with several Picassos. Avoid the nasty Howard Johnson’s. Quinta Real is the best choice.

This was the best hotel experience of my life in Mexico. It's romantic and has superb service and a touch of history. It is built into a bull-fighting ring. Rockefeller and George W. Bush have stayed here. If you work hard on the Net, you will find a reasonable price. Try the "Preferred Resorts" site. Also, call and press them for a good rate. This is a great place to stay for your honeymoon or if you just like nice hotels with a Mexican flavor. If it's high season, during Holy Week for example, forget it. You'll never get a room. Picasso, Braque, Chagall, and Miro! The building is amazing and contains books 300 to 400 years old. I was shocked to see they have original works of Picasso in a building with minimal security. It's a treasure to behold! I am not overstating this. It's a religious experience!

A MUST-SEE!

There are bands of musicians and donkeys with tequila on their backs traveling around town, singing and dancing (not the donkey, of course). The shots are free and the entertainment is like nothing I've seen before. They are such a happy bunch. I've never seen anything like it in my life. Take a walk in the evening with your lover or by yourself and find a lover. The performers stop from block to block. It's like the ultimate block party. And behind the caravan is a city worker cleaning up the debris.
