A March 2005 trip

Hotel | "Hotel Melia Ponce"
I've stayed in hotels in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, so please don't think I'm being unduly harsh, but the room was dirty. Specifically, some of the linens were stained, the bathroom needed a deep cleaning (the tile grout was dirty and there was visible dirt and dust), and the furniture was from the 1950s, but it lacked all retro appeal because it was so shabby. It short, us two girls were not pleased.
"Breakfast" consisted of bananas, pastries, coffee, and juice in a large, dirty-looking plastic container. It was served on a cute balcony, evidence of the better days seen by this hotel.
In short, while the hotel has a great location, it needs serious renovation. Right now, I'd rate it hostel quality. Please, please save your money and stay elsewhere. (A suggestion for that saved money would be the fabulous tourist shops in Ponce, where you can get a Velijente mask for a third of the price you'd pay in San Juan - if only I'd had time to get one myself!)
