You'll want to visit the reef, of course, and this author recommends using either QuickSilver or a smaller budget-oriented provider locally in Cairns (you'll want to make sure they take you to the outer reef for the best colors). Secondly, the Kuranda Rainforest is worth seeing (although be warned that the village itself is a tourist type of vile), and finally, Port Douglas is just a hour or so north – it’s worth hiring a car and heading out there.
