Visiting Dartmouth College and Surroundings

A travel journal to Hanover by mlkraemer

A quaint town nestled in New Hampshire's Upper Valley area, Hanover is home to Dartmouth College. The area is rich in cultural events, natural beauty and local hangout-type restaurants worth checking out.

The beauty of Hanover lies in its simplicity and size. You can't possibly get lost wandering in and out of the Main Street shops or strolling around Dartmouth's campus. Many hiking trails, a skating pond, and the Connecticut River are all accessible by foot.

Quick Tips:

Best Way To Get Around:

Public transportation is virtually non-existant here. You can catch a bus from Boston, Burlington, VT. or even New York City. But, unless you want to "visit like a student" (or prospective one) you'll want a car.
I stayed here while on a recruiting trip. It''s a bit pricey, but is the only hotel within walking distance from Dartmouth''s campus; it''s well worth the price for the convenience. Many of the Inn''s rooms overlook the Dartmouth green and the hotel also boasts two very good restaurants and amenities like Crabtree & Evelyn toiletries for guests. One word of caution: the rooms, though beautifully outfitted with poster beds and country-style quilts, are extremely dry. I always seem to leave with a cold.

Lou's RestaurantBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Lou's"

Lou's is a Hanover institution and by far the most popular brunch place in town. The omlettes here, served with home fries, toast or a muffin and juice, might put you one meal closer to that heart attack, but you'll love them. Lou's also caters and delivers birthday cakes and pies, which are very popular gifts with students. The high-top apple pies are so large, they're intimidating and the homemade cookies are roughly the size of a dinner plate.
There is often a 20 minute or so wait for a table, especially around peak breakfast times.

Norwich InnBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "The Norwich Inn Restaurant"

The Norwich Inn is a rare find in the immediate Hanover vicinity. It's sophisticated, ever-changing menu and professional waitstaff stand in contrast to the many collegiate pizza joints and middle-of-the-road choices lining Hanover's Main Street. The cuisine tends to be French-influenced with excellent game and seafood selections. Show up a bit before your reservation time and enjoy the cozy sitting room and fireplace.

Rosey Jeke's CafeBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Rosey Jeke's serves delectable sandwiches (fresh cheeses, meats and pestos are best), coffees and teas. Even in the dead of winter, this place conjures the spirit of a French cafe. The staff seem to all be friendly grad students who don't care how long you stay and read the paper or chat with friends. You're also likely to find professors and students meeting here to catch up over coffee or a quick bite.

The Ledyard Canoe Club, accessible by foot from Dartmouth's campus or by car (it's a quick turn left right after the Norwich/Hanover bridge), rents canoes to students and visitors alike. The flatwater that stretches for a few miles in either direction of the club is calm enough for novices to feel comfortable navigating.

Paddling down the river affords you great views of foliage in early fall and is a wonderful way to escape the quick pace of campus life in spring and summer. The student staff is friendly and often hosts special events, including morning Pancake Paddles and a Full Moon Paddle.
