Charming Savannah

Overview

Quote:
I love Savannah because of the historic district's natural and architectural feast of moss-filled trees, cobblestone streets, flower-colored squares, gracefully styled 18th- and 19th-century townhouses and homes, abundant gardens, sedate inns, and stately churches. As always, Savannah was great to spend a few days. We walked everywhere, through every square and down to Forsyth Park and up to River Street. Quick Tips: Best Way To Get Around: Because Savannah's a walking city, a rental car isn't really needed unless you want to visit some of the outlying forts and beaches, or perhaps Hilton Head or Charleston in South Carolina. The taxi fare from the airport to the city is abo...Read More

Tubby's Tankhouse

Restaurant | "Tubby's Tankhouse in Thunderbolt"

Quote:
Tubby's Tankhouse is located in Thunderbolt, which is right on the river and a few minutes from Savannah. It’s an old house with inside and outside eating. This place has a great laid-back atmosphere. They serve good grilled and broiled fish and shellfish. Thursday evening is the best evening to go. All the locals are gathering at Tubby’s to have a great night. You can sit in rocking chairs and look out over the intercoastal waterway while the sun is going down. You can have dinner, or you can just have a drink and listen to the music. Live music! Inside there is a bar and a dance floor. There is also a Tubby's Tankhouse at Riverstreet in Savannah. It is...Read More

Vinnie Van Go Go's

Restaurant | "Vinny Van GoGo"

Lots of places in Savannah serve pizza, but none do it as well as Vinnie Van Go Go. Vinnie is located at 317 W. Bryan St., across from Franklin Square. The smell of pizza will draw you in to this pizzeria as you walk around the City Market. The atmosphere is very casual. There's a small indoor dining area and counter, but most people prefer to sit outside, where they can people-watch and relax. They offer slices, whole pizzas, all the toppings, white and pesto pizzas, calzones, and spinach salad. Year after year, the New York-style pizza at Vinnie Van Go Go’s is voted the best in Savannah. When you have no table to sit at, you can as, many people do, order your pizza to...Read More

For the best sunset-watching spot during diner on Tybee Island is AJ's dockside. AJ's dockside has great food. As a tourist it's hard to find this restaurant. Many locals come here to have a great evening.

The interior is simple, but I don't care. As long the food is good and it's clean I can live with that. You have a great view over the water.

As many restaurants, AJ's has their own specialties, which are pretty good. The only negative, it's a small detail, but they do not have much variety on the menus. I was able to making a choice and had a great time at AJ's. There is live music during the weekend.

Visit the gallery of Jack Leigh and see Savannah like you've never seen it, see Savannah through the eyes of Jack Leigh. The gallery shows several black and white pictures of Savannah. They are so beautiful; you’ve must visit this gallery. The images were selected from the retrospective The Land I'm Bound To. They represent a cross-section of Jack Leigh's diverse bodies of work depicting the life and landscape of the Southeast. This mansion was built in 1873. This home was the first in Savannah to install electricity. It's located at the southeast corner of Lafayette Square.

It is since 1990s the Hamilton-Turner Inn. I've never slept in the Hamilton-Turner House, but I love B&B's. This one has already got some good reviews.

Before you go to Savannah, read the novel "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil". The point in reading this book is to acquaint you with the places and characters. It’s fun for everybody who has read the book and wants to see its printed pages come to life.

Some place you're going to see along the way are the Mercer House, Jim Williams Antique Shop, Armstrong House, Clary’s café, Hamilton-Turner House and Club One. There are about 22 places in Savannah that you recognize in the book. Go walking around in Savannah and search for these places.

It’s a nice way to discover Savannah.

The Squares of Savannah

Story/Tip

Wright Square Photo, Savannah, Georgia
Quote:
Before any other sightseeing, stroll through these squares. Along the way, you'll pass historic homes and churches for which Savannah is famous.

The squares: If you've seen the movie "Forrest Gump," then you may have recognized one of the squares. Chippewa Square is the square where Forrest Gump's bench was placed during the filming of that popular movie.

I love to walk through the parks. In the summer, when the weather is hot, you can sit in the shadows because of the many trees.

Discover the antique stores when you explore the streets of Savannah. Savannah has more than 60 antique shops. I love antique stores. All the old furniture, old books, objects or paintings. It all has a story. That's what I like about antique.

They are located in old buildings. What more can I say; For antiques, Savannah is the place!
