Spring Break at the Oregon Coast

A March 2005 trip to Otter Rock by Tami and Mike

This was our first time to visit the Oregon Coast when it wasn't summer time. We brought raincoats, waterproof pants, boots, etc., and we needed them for most of the week. It was fun to see the ocean during the storms.

Best Things Nearby:
Tide pools just below the resort and harbor seals within view of our condo.

Best Things About the Resort:
Gorgeous wooded location right next to the ocean. Well-maintained, quiet resort with more than enough interesting things in the area to keep one busy all week.

Resort Experience:
Bring rain gear. There's a short trail through the woods to the tiny town of Otter Rock. A stairway next to the outdoor pool leads down to the private beach. Harbor seals are to the right and Devil's Punch Bowl to the left. You can walk inside the Devil's Punch Bowl at low tide.

I never get tired of exploring the tide pools close to the Devil's Punch Bowl at Otter Rock. I was thinking about all the interesting creatures that live in the ocean, when I noticed a bright orange tentacle reaching out of the shallow water! It was a pacific octopus with an armspan about the same as mine. I stood just above it and we stared at each other with equal curiosity. My sister and my 12-year old also got a good look before it moved away.
One of the best free entertainments in Newport, Oregon is observing the sea lions basking along the docks. The large ones chase off the small ones with their loud barking.
