If we could turn back time, we would have been sitting on a beach in Maui, rather than Guadeloupe. This was our first visit to the Caribbean and we swear we will never return. Maybe someone could change our minds. It was a very long journey for us from Calgary to Montreal, then onto Guadeloupe. Had to be done over two days. Upon arriving, we found it extremely humid, it was quite a shock.
At the resort the first thing I saw were the garbage bins which are located at the front in the parking lot. Stray dogs are a problem on this island, and we are are told this is true for most of the Caribbean and Central/South America. This resort had its regular four legged visitors. Our unit was very cramped, the beds were very uncomfortable. The kitchen consisted of a unit with two burners, a small sink over a bar fridge in the hallway between the sleeping area and the bathroom, no counter space to speak of. It did contain all the amenities to cook a meal however. And after sampling some of the restaurant food, we opted to cook our own meals most of the time.
The air conditioning could only function if you were present in the room as it required the unit key. However all it did was blow hot air. At night we were required to keep our patio door closed, even on the second level. Bugs I think. Not sure, the staff spoke very little English and we spoke very little french. To find English speaking people on the island is near impossible, even at the tourist offices.
Unless you are staying at Club Med and never plan to leave, a car is required. I don't recommend driving in Pointe-a-Pitre. It is busy, people drive too fast and tend to park anywhere, making the already narrow roads NARROW.
The beaches were okay, not outstanding. There were no public restrooms or change rooms. We found one beach with washrooms, untidy of course. If you plan to snorkel, as we did, bring your own equipment, we didn't notice any rental locations. I am sure there are some. I would recommend taking a kayak/snorkel tour over to the Jacques Cousteau reserve. Again no washrooms in this area before you depart on your tour.
The towns and villages were rather disappointing to us. The guidebooks had them described as quaint, colourful french villages. The only colour we saw, was the graffiti on the buildings. The area in general is poor.
That sums up our week. We were ready to leave after 3 days.
