A June 1999 trip to Interlaken by neworleanstraveler

Quote: A week in Interlaken....at first it seemed like too much time. Little did I know that I could spend a month and not see it all. Interlaken is a quaint and timeless hamlet in the center of beautiful Switzerland. It is a must visit if you are in Suisse.

The Hotel Central Continental is located just off the main shopping strip of Interlaken. It is directly across the train tracks from the Interlaken West train station. This small 4 story hotel has a very homey feel to it. It is a family run hotel and don''t be surprised to find the front desk unmanned or the lights off in the lobby...while this seems unusual it is quite refreshing. I totally enjoyed my stay here. My room was comfortable and well kept and it had a spectacular view of the Jungfrau. The hotel also has a rooftop sun/observation deck to enjoy the stunning views. Breakfast is included and there is a full service restuarant and a bar/disco in the lower level. I enjoyed my stay here an...Read More

St. Beatus-Hohlen Caves

St. Beatus Caves according to legend were a dragon's lair until Beatus, an Irish missionary, vanquished the beast. Now the caves are open to the public and can be reached by bus, boat, car or by foot. I choose the latter and boy did I get a treat....a visually stunning hike (it was too beautiful for words). Once at the caves, tours start each half hour in a variety of languages. You explore caves to a depth of 3300 feet and see remarkable cascading waterfalls, stalagtites and stalagmites. Other Beatus related displays are also on hand. A cave museum and restaurant are available as well. I thought that the caves were a change from the typical Swiss adventure and I really enjoyed the experience. ...Read More

The Heimwehfluh is just a 5 minutes walk from the Interlaken West train station. From the base you can either take the funicular to the top or walk along the hiking trail. Once again, I selected the trail and loved the beautiful scenery that I was rewarded with. At the top, there is a kiddie play area with swings and teeter totters and other apparatus. Also, a child's coaster is available as well. A small kiosk with snacks and a restaurant with a terrace are available as well. The lookout tower affords you remarkable views of both the panaroma that is Interlaken and also the majesty of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau Mountains. If you only have a day or two in Interlaken, I woul...Read More

While this was not on my must do in Interlaken list, a local suggested that it was a great way to cover not easily reached areas. I decided to take her advice and was very glad that I did. I started out very early, and made a very bold move in attempting to take both lake cruises in one day. While I suceeded in this mission...it didn't allow me much time to explore the sights that were to be found along the way. I would suggest either two days for the two lakes or to concentrate your attentions on just one of them. I found that Lake Brienz (Brienzersee) was the more attractive of the two. Each lake is a blue green color that comes from the fact that the lakes are glacial feed. The ...Read More

This was certainly a great moment of my trip. I started out on the 8am train from Interlaken Ost and then connected at Lauterbrunnen to my next train....then another connection at Kleine Scheidegg for the last leg of my trip to the highest railway station in Europe (over 11,000 feet). Now this train trip lasts about 2 hours and there is so much to do at the summit that this is truly a day trip. I took the 4pm train out and was very exhausted. Take your time once off the train, the air is very thin and you may not feel well...pace yourself and you will be fine. It is a wild feeling to be so high up! You can walk along one of the snow banks and take a dog sled ride or do as ...Read More
