A June 1999 trip
to Interlaken by neworleanstraveler
Quote: A week in Interlaken....at first it seemed like too much time. Little did I know that I could spend a month and not see it all. Interlaken is a quaint and timeless hamlet in the center of beautiful Switzerland. It is a must visit if you are in Suisse.
The best things in Interlaken:
- The St. Beatus Caves
- Lake Cruising
- Trummelbach Falls
- Walking along the main shopping street
- Adventure sports
- The Heimwehfluh

St. Beatus-Hohlen Caves
The lookout tower affords you remarkable views of both the panaroma that is Interlaken and also the majesty of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau Mountains.
If you only have a day or two in Interlaken, I would suggest that you see other sites, but this was a great last day jaunt. I was able to get a 360 degree view of the town that I grew to love in just a week!

Heimwehfluh Observation Point
I started out very early, and made a very bold move in attempting to take both lake cruises in one day. While I suceeded in this mission...it didn't allow me much time to explore the sights that were to be found along the way. I would suggest either two days for the two lakes or to concentrate your attentions on just one of them. I found that Lake Brienz (Brienzersee) was the more attractive of the two.
Each lake is a blue green color that comes from the fact that the lakes are glacial feed. The mountains that surround them are resplendent and offer spectacular photo oppurtunities. On each voyage you are given several oppurtunities to disembark and see the sites of a particular village or town. I really enjoyed a stop at Geisbach See to view the rugged waterfall, and at Thun to explore this charming town.
With the purchase of your ticket it allows you use of the public rail and bus system to return to Interlaken, if you miss the last boat (which I did).
As I said, the journeys are a treat and great way to see the sites in a relaxed way!

Now this train trip lasts about 2 hours and there is so much to do at the summit that this is truly a day trip. I took the 4pm train out and was very exhausted.
Take your time once off the train, the air is very thin and you may not feel well...pace yourself and you will be fine. It is a wild feeling to be so high up!
You can walk along one of the snow banks and take a dog sled ride or do as I did and propel yourself down a snow luge course in an oversized frisbee. I did it so well the first time that I went back for more....on the second trip I spun out and flew face first into hard packed snow (busted knuckles and lip). It was still a blast!!!!!
You can also walk through glacier tunnels and explore ice sculptures that have been carved from the glacier (note: bring shoes with good traction...you will be walking on pure and solid ice that is very slippery). Definetly, tour the observation deck and get the most thrilling experience of both joy and terror from the vantage point. You can literally see forever (on a clear day)!
This day trip is a must if you visit Interlaken and don't take a package trip with a company that only allows you a few minutes at the summit. Buy your own ticket and enjoy the full day.
Another hint is that most hotels have a special TV channel that will show the forecast for the Jungfrau region and the visibility at Jungfraujoch. Use that channel to plan your visit...the clearer the day the better views you will have.
Enjoy...I know I did!
