Good Friday Dive Tioman

A March 2005 trip to Tioman Island by Wander Girl

It was a long weekend and I just couldn't stay at home, so I packed my dive gear and headed towards the white beaches of Tioman.

I left for Tioman from Singapore on a bus on a public holiday - What was I thinking?? It took me 4 hours just to clear Singapore immigration, cross the causeway, and clear Malaysia immigration. Never try this.

Quick Tips:

Best Way To Get Around:

Several ferry companies ply Mersing and Tioman. A speedboat ride one way will take 1 to 1.5 hours and costs RM35. There is a Marine Park fee of RM5 payable at the entrance of Mersing Jetty. On the island walking is the best way to get around. The resorts will usually provide transport. However, to go beach-hopping, and take the boat.
I always stay with Barbura whenever I go to Tioman because they have a great dive shop next to it. The Chinese seafood restaurant is spacious and rather well-known for their food. The rooms are well maintained and clean. I took a sea-view room this time, which was very nice. I fell asleep to the sound of crashing waves every night and woke up to the sunrise.

The Marine Park is splendid with colourful corals. Look out for turtles and various nudibranches.

At the other outlying dive sites, there are many beautiful swim-throughs. Moray eels and groupers are common. There are also several wrecks that attract schools of barracudas.

Tioman Reef Divers have well-maintained dive equipment, good air, and very experienced and professional dive masters. Contact Reeno or Akemi at reeno@tm.net.my, or see www.tiomanreefdivers.com.

Story/Tip

I was on the ferry to Tioman. We were almost halfway there when both engines of the boat broke down and we were left drifting. The boat did not have a radio, compass, or an anchor. It did have a full load of passengers, many of whom were throwing up, as it was quite choppy. The spot where the boat broke down could not receive any mobile reception. Thankfully, we drifted to a spot where someone managed to call the boat company for help. The whole ordeal lasted one and a half hours.
