The BW was very clean. The room had a fridge, microwave, free Internet access, and a pull-out sofa bed. It was easy to get to from the major highway and was only 5 miles south of the city. Easy access to local attractions. The night staff needed to brush up on their people skills, but other than that, the rest of the staff was friendly and accommodating.

The HRC San Antonio is not much different from all the other HRCs. The food and beverages are overpriced, and the staff is too busy to be friendly--but they aren’t rude either. There is one thing that sets this HRC apart from others that I have been to: you can sit outside on the patio, overlooking the San Antonio River. On a beautiful day with a slight breeze, it is positively a place to stop and rest for a bit while enjoying a meal. The patio is connected to the Riverwalk, where people are strolling by and taking pictures. If you are a people-watcher, you will love this stop.

The Alamo is open to visitors for a small donation. Outside there is a "history" wall which provides a timeline view of the events leading up to and after the war. Inside, you will take an extremely short and restricted walk through the Alamo that leads right to the gift shop. I think we spent more time in the gift shop than we did touring.

Visit the Alamo website at http://www.thealamo.org; you will definitely find a wealth of resources and history on the site.

Overall, I was a disappointed by this visit. The city has been built on the original grounds of the Alamo to the point that some of your outside pictures will have towering modern-day buildings in them.

The Buckhorn Saloon is a sight to be seen. The Buckhorn offers food, music, a saloon atmosphere, a museum, and a gift shop. It is located on a side street in San Antonio not far from the Riverwalk. You won’t be able to miss the building, due to its unique characteristics. If you plan on going later in the day, you should call first. The Buckhorn does close early for private parties. When we arrived, the restaurant was about to close, so we had to eat first, then tour the museum. The steaks we ordered were excellent. Even though they closed early for a private party, they allowed us to take our time through the museum. The museum fee was a bit expensive, but you can find coupons in local travel magazin...Read More

Mathis, TX Best of IgoUgo

Story/Tip

Be Careful!! Mathis, TX is NOT a great area to be in. Let me start from the beginning. We (my aunt and uncle, my husband and his nephew) drove from New Jersey to Texas. It was for the most part a peaceful drive--we would stop every 1-2 hours so my aunt and husband could take a break. Both suffer from health problems. After driving for 10+ hours a day, we would stop at a hotel along the way to spend the night. I do NOT recommend staying at ANY Days Inn hotels in ANY state. We stayed at three Days Inns in different states, and all of them were horrible. On day 4, we arrived in Texas. Since we were a day early, we decided to visit Corpus Christie so my aunt could see the ocean (Gulf of ...Read More
