Montechoro Beach Club

A February 2005 trip to Albufeira by paularms

This was my first visit to Portugal, and I loved it. It's a superb country to visit any time of the year. The Montechoro was a Gold Crown but lost the rating, and it's not hard to see why. The reception and bar look like they have recently been refurbished, but sadly, the rooms haven't. They're clean and comfortable but a little tired; they need to be sorted out, and quickly. Bulbs are blown and we had a cracked sink, different-shaped spotlights in the bathroom, and a shower that had a mind of its own!

The number-one highlight was the view (from room 408). The pool area looks good, although the pool was empty when we visited and I would imagine it would be very crowded in the high season.

Quick Tips:

Get a card for the exit on level 6. It saves walking up a hill, as it leads directly onto the street level. Try cooking your own dinner at the Sizzling Stone, or the restaurant opposite level 6 is worth a visit.

Best Way To Get Around:

We hired a car. I don't know if it was the time of year (February), but the roads were quite and it was very easy to get around the area. Try taking the motorised 'train' from the Strip for a round trip - very cheap.
Best Things Nearby:
Plenty of bars and resturants within 2 minutes' walk

Best Things About the Resort:
Close to amenities and the beach. Superb views if you get the right rooms.

Resort Experience:
I already stated that the rooms, although comfortable and fairly clean, do need attention. The grounds are very well-maintained. The building itself could also do with a coat of paint, as the balconies are black, rather than white, where guests have leaned on the walls to admire the view. That aside, it is well-situated for easy acces to 'the Strip', beach, and main roads. This isn't meant to sound negative, as we had an excellent week, and we will definitely return for another out-of-season break. I think it may be very crowded in season.
