We go to London at least two or three times a year and have stayed in the Earl's Court area that last nine or ten times. I like this area because there are lots of good pubs and two subway lines nearby: Piccadilly and District.

Piccadilly and District lines
I have stayed at five different hotels and B&Bs here and will review all of them. There are lots of pubs and restaurants within walking distance. I like the area because it's easy to get around, just eight stops to Leiscester Square and 40 minutes the other way to London Heathrow airport on the Piccadilly line.

Quick Tips:

There are lots of little shops in the area. You can get sodas, beer and wine, and snacks. Since the exchange is so bad, it saves money to get these things and take them back to the hotel.

There is a Sainsbury's grocery store about a 10-minute walk up on Gloucester Rd. This is a very big and wonderful shop; they have pre-made salads and sandwiches and a big selection of wine, beers, and snacks. It's a good place to stock up.

Right on Earl's Court Road, there are many small grocery stores that also have a selection of snacks and beverages.

Best Way To Get Around:

Get a daily off-peak tube pass ₤4.60.

Earls Court

Merlyn Court Hotel

We have stayed here the last three times we've visited London; due to the weak dollar, we had to economize, so we had a room with a sink for ₤55 per night. The shower and toilets were right outside, and all three times, we had the facilities to ourselves. Breakfast is simple: one egg, toast, and coffee. Lucy, the manager, and the man (I forget his name) at the front desk are so nice. Our room was ready, but if yours isn't, they will hold the bags for you.

This is at the quieter end of Barkston Gardens (see my review of Barkston Gardens hotel), so you get a little bit of street noise when the corner bar closes, but that is it. We will stay there in the future. They also have rooms with facilities; I have seen three or four of them, and they are nice. It's not too big, but they have dressers and wardrobes, so that is fine.

This hotel was close to the Tube. In fact, it was almost right over it and you could hear the train and the announcements from the rooms, but it stops at midnight.

The front desk staff couldn't have been nicer, the room was nice, and the breakfast was simple, just coffee, juice, toast, and some processed cheese, so I have had much better breakfasts at other hotels in the area. I am partial to the Merlyn or Barkston Gardens, but I would stay here again if they were not available.

Barkston Gardens Hotel

They have their own website, but if you do a search, there are lots of London discount-hotel websites that have links and lots of pictures. See www.holidaycity.com, then look for Barkston Gardens.

This is one of the nicer hotels in the area. It’s also bigger and has elevators and a 24-hour front desk. They have a very nice breakfast with breads, rolls, yogurt, fruit, juice, coffee, and tea. The rooms, for the most part, are big, and the bathrooms are very nice for London since so many hotels have tiny bathrooms. There is also a nice bar and Internet access for free.

All in all, I like this hotel, but the prices fluctuate depending on the time of year and the size of room. They have family rooms with two double beds and a fold-out couch.

Small rooms

Rushmore Hotel

I liked the location. The room was rather small but adequate. They seem to have thin walls, and we had some Germans next to us who liked to party, which was my only complaint. The staff was nice, and the breakfast is just rolls and coffee—nothing exciting, but I would stay here if the price was right. Last time it was ₤65 for two people, including breakfast and tax. They have a website, and you can book directly from that. See my other reviews for pictures.

Italian dining at Earls Court

Dino's

The price in U.S. dollars is high due to the exchange rate. I have been coming here for the past 4 years, and now it seems expensive. Two people can eat, with a half-carafe of wine and coffee, for ₤20. They have all kinds of great pastas and wonderful pizza, and the desserts are really out of this world. There is a full bar and a good selection of wines.

I always stay in Earls Court and eat here at least one time. They also have three to four, or more, Dinos in the area. One is up the street on Gloucester RD. They have a large nonsmoking section, too.

Indian Summer

Restaurant

Indian Summer

This is an excellent Indian restaurant. I have eaten here two times, and both times it was very good. It can be pricy because most things are á la carte and extra orders of rice or something can add up. The service is excellent, although having an Oriental waitress in an Indian restaurant makes it lose some of its authenticity.

The location in the Earl's Court Area is convenient. There are lots of fast-food places in the area, like McDonald's, but I don't eat at McDonalds' in the US, so I am certainly not going to eat there in London, where there are so many good places to eat.

Since Indian Summer is on a side street, but easy to find, it never seemed busy. I would eat there again.

Costa Coffee

I love Costa Coffee. I can't figure out how Starbucks can exist in London with Costa Coffee shops around.

They have excellent hot chocolate and cappuccino.

They also have lots of nice pastries and sandwiches for a quick lunch on the run.

Docklands

Experience

Canary Wharf
Take the tube to Canary Wharf. In nicer weather, you can sit outside and have lunch or a drink.

These are all refurbished warehouses.

The Docklands Museum is also interesting, with a lot of history on London and the Thames River and how people lived in the past.
