I spent 3 days in Upper Canyon in Ruidoso with friends and family. It is a great place for long weekend with super scenery!

Hotel

We stayed in three-bedroom, two-bathroom house in the hills of Upper Canyon. Accommodations were nice and clean. We had large decks at the front and rear of the house. This house had some space around it--woods and some degree of privacy. Beware of accommodations in Upper Canyon, as some of the cabins/houses are very close together. It may not be the remote cabin in the woods you envisioned.

There were four adults and four children, and space was cozy but not too small. The kitchen was adequate, and all dishes were secondhand but clean. The unit had a washer/dryer, which was very helpful! This is one of several houses/cabins Story Book Cabins has available.

This is a small café, but their strength is the homemade pies. They are among the best I have ever had! And somewhat a marvel given they are baked at this altitude. You can eat in with coffee/hot cocoa or take it to-go for dessert. Pies are about $15 and well worth it. Don't miss the apple pie! They are great to take back to your cabin/house or for an after-dinner dessert.

Pie Pantry is located a half-block north of Suddereth in downtown Ruidoso.

Hiking Upper Canyone and Cedar CreekBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Nirvana for family hiking"

We went in mid-March, so there were several snow-melt creeks to traverse. Our kids loved this. The forests were clean and always some trees across the creeks. Trails are pretty safe, with few hazards for young children. Didn't see any poisonous plants or dangerous areas. Didn't see any other people around either, which was great!

Story/Tip

My family just spent 3 days in Ruidoso with another family, lodging in the Upper Canyon area. It's a great place for a long weekend. Ski Apache is nearby. Beware that the road to the ski 'resort' is long, winding, and treacherous. I would not attempt it in inclement weather. But if you are not there for skiing, there is great hiking nearby. Check the Cedar Creek area of the Lincoln National Forest.

While there is shopping in Ruidoso, it's not a compact, 'walkable' downtown area for browsing.

People seemed pretty nice, with a good mix of locals and people that have vacation places in town.
