The New Millenium

A September 2002 trip to Caribbean Islands by MalervyC

This was my very first cruise. There were 11 of us in our party.

Attraction | "Snorkeling in St Maarten"

I would not recommend this excursion. I was not impressed with the vessel we were on or the instructors we had. The water was cloudy and very rocky. I didn't see any shipwreck. I actually ended up getting motion sickness from swallowing the water and the waves bobbing me up and down. I didn't have the rum punch, but I heard it was very strong and very bad.

Brimstone Hill FortressBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Brimstone Hill Fortress & Gardens in St Kitts"

The Brimstone Fortress is an amazing and educational experience. The cab ride is about 25 minutes, but you are rewarded with the quaint views of the island. Once you get to Brimstone, there is a visitor center and souvenir shop. A winding, open-air staircase leads you to the very top of the fortress. We sang the Rocky theme up the steps. There are multiple rooms for exploring and lots of photo opportunities. To the left is the island of Nevis, and to the right is an inactive volcano. Both views make great postcard pictures.

On the day we visited, the ocean was so calm and clear, you could see the reflections of the clouds in the sky. It was very hot and very humid, but the shade of the fortress was surprisingly nice. I would recommend this to anyone who has the pleasure of visiting St Kitts.

Magens Bay BeachBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Magen's Bay Beach - St. Thomas"

We were supposed to take a catamaran to Magen's Bay, but the excursion was cancelled at the last minute. We decided to take a taxi to the same destination. For a number of years, Magen's Bay was voted one of the world’s top-ten beaches. I now know why.

When you get there, you are surrounded by a thick canopy of flowered trees that open up to the bay, which itself is a huge U-shaped beach. The white sand is like powder and the waves are crystal clear and roll so slowly. The beach is considered a national park, so you don't pay an admission - you make a $3 donation and use of the beach is your thank you. After swimming here, I couldn't go back to the Jersey Shore!

We rented some lounge chairs and hung on the beach. I took a walk to the dive shop and bought a beach football. The group of us hung out throwing the ball back and forth. Magen's Bay is so relaxing, you feel the need to do nothing but enjoy yourself.

Bartenders walk right out to the water to take your order. The food at the stand is good too, especially the pizza.

One drawback - the bathrooms. I've never seen a clean bathroom at a beach, and this one was no exception. It's located about 20 yards from the water. Wear shoes, that's all I'm gonna say.

Jolly Roger Pirate CruisesBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Sailing the Jolly Roger in Barbados"

After getting absolutely NO hospitality from the people of Bridgetown, I was very leary about this excursion. The day before, I was seasick in St Maarten, so the thought of another small boat ride was not my number one activity for the day.

I was completely mistaken. I cannot say enough about the great time we had on the Jolly Roger. The crew was very friendly and entertaining, and the ship looks like an authentic pirate ship. There is a tiny bathroom below along with an area that has T-shirts and bandanas for sale. We sailed for 30 minutes and then anchored in the middle of the ocean.

You and your party could decide whether you wanted to go to the beach or stay on the ship. Everyone except our party chose the beach, so we had the ship to ourselves. We walked to plank and swung off the Tarzan rope. The water was so blue and very deep. I was nervous - I kept looking for sharks!

Jolly Roger Pirate Cruises
Bridgetown, Barbados

This tour was very informative, but also somewhat boring. The thing I enjoyed most was the ride to the banana plantation where you learn how bananas are grown. You even get to take some fresh samples. Also, the local market is right next to a fishing village. There are so many things you can buy here, and you can bargain, too.
