Prague is a wonderful European city, full of amazing architecture, an incredible history, and curious citizens. Undoubtedly the place has changed a lot since I visited in 1993. At that time McDonald's was a big success, and K-Mart and Kentucky Fried Chicken were being built in the historic downtown area. My favorite memories of visiting Praha were catching glimpses of the quickly disappearing Eastern society that was hidden away for decades.Quick Tips: Read up on the wild and complex history of Prague before visiting. You'll have a much greater appreciation of the many buildings, bridges and plazas that you'll encounter on your tour of the town.Best Way To Get Around: Though it i...Read More

Attraction | "Stary Zidovsky Hrbitov"

Josefov Photo, Prague, Czech Republic
Quote:
Easily the most haunting sight in Prague is of Stary Zidovsky Hrbitov, the Jewish cemetery. All of the Jews in Praha were relegated to a small section of town, and could only be buried in this small patch of land. There are approximately 12,000 graves that are stacked on top of each other, layer after layer. The tombstones entirely cover the ground from lack of space, jutting out at strange angles, which creates an eerie sensation that the ground is pushing up. The Prague ghetto also has six remaining synagogues to visit and a Jewish history museum.

Narodni Muzeum

Best Of IgoUgo

Attraction

Quote:
The gigantic Renaissance building at the end of Wenceslas Square houses the "national" museum, which seems strange to me in that is comes across more like a science or general history museum. Built in 1890, the Narodni Muzeum houses exhibits on mineral and animal life, the requisite dinosaurs, anthropological studies, along with a primeval Bohemian history. The early cultures of Moravia and Slovakia are also explored in Narodni Muzeum, but for the most part this building seems geared towards educating visitors about nature and science.

Attraction | "Vaclavske Namesti"

Quote:
Wenceslas Square, or Vaclavske Namesti, is the commercial hub of the new Prague. People gather here to shop or meet for coffee, or perhaps to take a stroll along the wide street with trees and plants. While many of the stores and restaurants have begun to take advantage of the premium prices that tourists are willing to pay, bargains can still be had (or could be, when I visited in 1993). The best part of visiting Wenceslas Square for me was heading to the pastry shops, where you could purchase filling pastries for less than five cents. But as I was munching away on my cream-filled confection I couldn't help feel a sense of dread looking over across the street at construction beginning on a Ken...Read More

Prague Castle (Hradcany Castle)

Attraction | "Prazsky Hrad"

Quote:
Prazsky Hrad is more than a single castle. It is a collection of historical sights and attractions that are also still in use as the political nerve center of Prague. The Royal Palace, or Kralovsky Palac, may be the most prominent feature of Prazsky Hrad, consisting of multiple elements itself. They include Vladislav Hall, an enormous room that is still used today for prestigious national events. The dramatic gothic cathedral of St. Vitus, St. Wenceslas and St. Adalbert, or Chram Svateho Víta, stands out among Prazsky Hrad's collection of buildings. It's easy to spot with its spires reaching high up over the palace's walls. St. George's Monastery, the Powder Tower and the gardens are also al...Read More

Old Town Historic Center of Prague

Attraction | "Staromestske Namesti"

Old Town Historic Center of Prague Photo, Prague, Czech Republic
Quote:
Staromestske Namesti is the old town square, constructed approximately 900 years ago. It is flanked by the Old Town Hall, the Tynsky Chram church, St. Nicholas, the Kinsky Palace and the Stone Bell home. More importantly, it serves as a historical reminder to all that has transpired in Prague during the past millennium.

Buzzing with activity, Staromestske Namesti is centrally located at will be passed through numerous times on your journeys from one end of town to another. It's also a great place to stop, rest, and people watch. Soaking up the character of this great plaza is fun, until the snow has completely soaked into your shoes.
