Booking Mayan Palace turned into a disaster. We were offered an "upgrade," which it wasn't, and moved beneath construction. The problems were not grand. The staff was substandard for Mexico, and there was constant construction noise. Things were not operating. They had food, a spa, entertainment, Internet, and boats. We were disappointed in the entire scenario and are awaiting a RCI response.

Best Things About the Resort:
Pool was great. The grounds that are finished are beautiful.

Resort Experience:
We were tricked into taking an "upgrade", which included a misrepresented time share presentation as well as a move to an entirely different hotel, from the Mayan Palace to the Grand Mayan. It turns out the place we had booked through RCI the Mayan Palace was oversold. Both rooms we were in had serious maintenance problems that they seemed unable to resolve. For example, one with no hot water and the other with a shower that would not drain. Had very bad cleaning service, with turndown two of the seven nights and never enough towels. Staff was very unresponsive, and one blamed the other for the problems while nothing got taken care of. It has a beautiful pool, and some of the grounds are spectacular. There is still a lot of construction, and our first room provided a view of construction equipment and a large flock of workers, many of whom had no access to indoor plumbing. We were horrified when we awoke our first day and saw this. We would have preferred the Mayan Palace, where most restaurants, as well as activities, were located. The amount of walking that moving us caused for my 80-year-old mother was unreasonable.

Until the many issues at the Grand Mayan are dealt with, I would not recommend staying there. You might try the Mayan Palace. People seemed happier there, even if the rooms are a little smaller.

Bakal Restaurant and Other Mayan Palace Eateries

Bakal is primarily a buffet restaurant where many of the theme dinners are held, as well as the breakfast buffet.

It's so-so in terms of variety. The desserts were good, but the food occasionally seemed a little dried out. It's a pretty place but not very exciting. Try eating off the property, where there are better prices and more variety.
