Charlottetown, the capital, dates back to the early 1700s. The Province House National Historic Site was where the first meeting to discuss federal unification was held in 1867 and that led to confederation in 1867. There are 1 hour guided walking tours of the town that leave from City Hall. The island's full length is only 140 miles so Charlottetown is a good base from which to explore. The surrounding countryside has dramatic red soil cliffs that have been eroded into interesting shapes due to the wind and water. One of my favourite places was "Elephant Rock" where the erosion created a hugh red elephant. Sadly, a heavy storm destroyed the elephant's "trunk" a few years ago so we'll wait to s...Read More

This lighthouse was built in 1875 and manned until 1963. It is now a 9 room inn that is furnished with antiques and has handmade quilts on the beds. There is a museum featuring information and artifacts from the island''s lighthouses. You can climb the curved stairs to the top for a great view of the water and sandy beach. At night, the beach is a popular place to watch the sun set over the water. During summer days, there is a lifeguard on duty at the beach. Rooms are $80-$125. (CDN) and the Inn features a dining room, although we didn''t eat there. The surrounding area has lots of nature trails.

With an area of 10 square miles, this park offers sandy beaches, sand dunes, biking and hiking trails and salt marshes where you can see blue herons in abundance. The northern part of the park runs along the Gulf of St. Lawrence. At the Cavendish area of the park, the Green Gables Books House is based on the "Anne of Green Gables" books by L.M. Montgomery. This charming green and white cottage features a colourful garden as well as a mini Green Gables House in the yard. It is furnished with Victorian style furniture and guided tours are available.

North Cape is a very windy promontory with a lighthouse and a wind turbine station that studies the wind powered generators nearby. If you visit the North Cape Lighthouse at the north west corner of the island, make sure to go inside and get a confirmation marker of your visit. If you also get to the East Point Lighthouse at the north east end of the island, you show staff there your marker and will be given a Traveller's Award "for successfully completing a visit from one end of our Island to the other" as the award says. It is dated and (pre) signed by the Premier of the Province. If you start at East Point and finish at North Cape, you will still receive the award which also features a drawing ...Read More

Cows Ice Cream

Story/Tip

Quote:
This national chain of ice cream parlors started in P.E.I. As well as premium ice cream, there is lots of gift ware and clothing, all featuring the colourful cartoon cows that give this place its name. Chocoholics will enjoy "Chocolate Monster", chocolate ice cream loaded with crunchy bits of English toffee or "Turtle Cow" that tastes lick the popular Turtles candy. "Cherry Springer" is also good but there are lots of flavours to pick from and you'll have no trouble finding one that's right for you. The ice cream is yummy and the clothing and gifts are good quality. They market their merchandise (not the ice cream though) on line and have a feature on their web page called "Model for Us" where th...Read More
