Story/Tip
We bought a 3-day Transport Pass, so we caught the famous cable cars around the place, as well as the local buses to all the attractions. We walked across the famous Golden Gate Bridge (and back). China Town (great food), Fisherman’s Wharf, Pier 39 (saw all the Sea Lions), and Ghirardelli Square (chocolate factory since 1852 – had the biggest sundaes at the soda fountain, yum). We also caught the ferry to Alcatraz – ‘The Rock’ – where the rule was "You are entitled to food, clothing, shelter, and medical attention. Anything else you get is a privilege." Al Capone was incarcerated there. The tour, which incorporates a 12-minute video and 35-minute audio, is very interesting. (http://www.nps.gov/alcatraz). We also caught a ferry to Sausalito, a 40-minute ride across the bay. Sausalito is just so charming--a quiet, elegant town which looks more like a Mediterranean village with lots of cute shops and galleries.
