Soaring Eagle Casino in Mt. Pleasant Mi

A February 2005 trip to Michigan by Moonlightred

I took a weekend pleasure trip with a friend who had never been to a casino. I think the Soaring Eagle is the best casino in mid-Michigan for the atmosphere and service.

The Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort is a favorite destination of mine. When a friend from work wanted to get away for the weekend, I knew exactly where to call. It can be difficult to get last-minute reservations, especially if there's a concert or show the weekend you want to stay, but I called about two weeks in advance for Valentine's Day weekend and was able to get a standard room (they call it first-class) with two queen beds without a problem. If you have stayed there before, they keep all your information on file, and you just verify and give them a credit card to hold the room.

The service is wonderful, from the valet parking to the quick check-in process. Everyone calls you by name and is friendly and helpful. We had the bell staff take our bags from the car, so as soon as we left the front desk, he was waiting and led the way to our room. He put our luggage in the room and showed us where the lights were and how to control the heat. To top it off, he went and brought us a bucket of ice.

We didn’t get a view with the room, but it had a huge window that let in a lot of light. The TV is on a swivel and pulls out of the cabinet, so we could sit at the little table, have our drinks, and watch the news. The beds are comfortable enough to lie on and read a book for a while without a backache, and there were enough pillows--four on each bed. There is the customary alarm-clock radio and notepads, as well as notecards/stationery and nice pens. The furniture is done in a dark wood color, with carvings on it to compliment the Native American theme. There is framed artwork above the beds and one in the bathroom.

The bathroom is roomy--big enough for us both to be in at the same time and put on our makeup. A large mirror covers one whole wall, and the vanity has room to place all your toiletry items. There is a hair dryer and coffee pot, as well as a clothes iron and more glasses. The shower and tub are standard-size, but instead of the "plastic" interior, the wall is a fake flagstone--I think that’s what you call it. The water pressure is good--something I am a stickler about, since I want the shower to sting at full blast. This one does.

We took advantage of the large indoor heated swimming pool and hot tub. They provide towel service for you. I especially like that there are adults-only hours for the pool in the morning and then again at night for a few hours.

The casino is big and airy. Smoking is allowed, of course, but there is a fantastic air system so that your eyes don’t burn and you don’t come out smelling smoke-contaminated. The casino is open 24 hours. Anyway, first take advantage of the free valet parking out front. The decor is in a Native American theme, tastefully done. There are fake rocks and trees. I love the "chandeliers"--be sure to look up.

There are over 4,700 slot machines. They are split into two areas: the resort casino and the slot palace across the street. A bus takes you to and from the Slot Palace across the street every few minutes if you want to go over. There is a good assortment of machines, reel games, video games, video poker, and progressive, where you can win cash, cars, or other prizes. The slots range from a penny to $25. I love the nickel video slots, and I can usually get to one I enjoy within a few minutes. There is plenty of room to walk around and not trip over each other.

There are blackjack, craps, roulette, and poker tables down the center of the casino. Table minimums are reasonable. They take your name and will page you when a seat comes available for your table of choice if no seats are available. Dealers are professional and courteous. Lessons are offered in the day at specific times to learn to play the table games. Bingo is offered daily at the Slot Palace.

Security is tight. There are three cashiers’ booths running, so the wait in line is usually pretty short. So is the wait for a hand payout at a machine. I hate waiting over 5 minutes for anything--I want to get on and play. I recommend joining the slot club, even if you play just a little. The rewards are many; I almost always earn enough to cover meals and snacks, just from the nickel slots. It also puts you on the mailing list for promotions and future discounts. There is a good buffet attached, a great steak house, and even a nice, fast-service, sit-down snack bar. I will discuss these in the restaurant section.
