Palm Beach - more money than i will ever have

A November 2000 trip to Palm Beach by Tideone

The citizens of Palm Beach will not have to worry about me moving here anytime soon - unless I write the Great American novel and it sells millions of copies. Money is the key word in Palm Beach.

There were several highlights of our short visit to Palm Beach. First was seeing all of the expensive and beautiful homes that line the Atlantic Ocean on A1A. Second was parking behind a Rolls Royce on Worth Avenue. And third was strolling down Worth Avenue and window shopping.

Quick Tips:

Bring lots of money if you plan to do any shopping on Worth Avenue. These are no outlet mall stores but the real things.

Best Way To Get Around:

The best way to see Palm Beach is by car, but the best way to see Worth Avenue is to walk.

Breakers Palm BeachBest of IgoUgo

Hotel | "The Breakers"

I wish that I could say that I had stayed here but we did walk through the lobby and the grounds - trying not to look too much out of place. All I can say is this is really a nice hotel and someday maybe I can afford to stay at least one night here.

This is not your typical Holiday Inn or Marriott but a five star hotel that truly deserves its rating. I almost had to pay $16 just for the privilege of parking our rented car while we got out to look around but I think the valet knew we were out of place and suggested a parking place down the drive. I didn''t feel so bad when a guy in a Rolls Royce passed right by the valet parking and parked in front of us.

We had thought about eating in one of the hotel''s seven restaurants but after a look at the prices we decided we had better wait until we got back to Delray Beach. I will highly recommend this fabulous hotel not just for staying there but just to walk through.

Testa's RestaurantBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Testa's"

Don't let the fact this restaurant sits right next to a gas station scare you away. The gas and service station along with the pantry and deli all belong to the same owner.

Testa's has been a favorite of locals and visitors alike since it opened its doors in 1921.

During the season reservations are required and during the off season they are recommended.

Testa's is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner with a Sunset Menu offered daily from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The Sunset Menu consists of approximately ten popular items from the regular menu but at a much lower price. For the lower price you get an entree, beverage, rolls, soup or salad, dessert and coffee.

Testa's is known for its steaks and seafood with their most popular item being the steak for two that is carved at your table.

No matter which meal you choose to eat at Testa's it will be good.

Flagler MuseumBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

Whitehall was the home of Henry Flagler, the man who brought the railroad to Florida and along with it the first tourists. Flagler was already a very wealthy man when he began building the railroad down the East Coast of Florida and along with it a chain of hotels to house the many people who flocked to Florida to enjoy the sun and surf.

In addition to seeing how Flagler and his wife enjoyed the later years of their lives at Whitehall, there is also one of his railroad cars on the property. He would use this car when he went to check on the progress of his railroad. Flagler is also known as the man who built the railroad that went to sea. The railroad line ran from Miami to Key West and was later destroyed by a hurricane in 1935.

Worth Avenue ShoppingBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Worth Avenue"

Don't expect to find WalMart or Big Lots anywhere along this street but do expect to find such names as Cartier, Tiffany, Gucci, Chanel and many other upscale shops along this street that dates back to the 1920's.

Eventhough I couldn't afford probably 90 percent of the items I saw while window shopping on this world famous street it was fun to mingle with those who have more than they know what to do with.

Being the Saturday after Thanksgiving there were a lot of people shopping in the over 200 stores that line this Mediterranean-style shopping avenue.

This is actually a branch of a store in London, England and is reportedly where "James Bond" did his shopping.

One thing is for sure, spying and protecting oneself's is not cheap, at least at this store. This is your one stop spy shop with over 400 items dealing with spying and personal protection.

Even if you don't buy anything it is worth just checking out the latest in spy gear.
