The flight was a non-eventful direct flight from JFK. We stayed at a guest house on a hillside of a friend of one our companions just minutes away from the carnival route, and it was very convenient. We joined a "mas camp" (the actual parade itself), partied like crazy, left the carnival before it was over, took an island-hopper plane over to Tobago and just mellowed out for 3 days on the beach.
Quick Tips:
If you plan on being part of Carnival, get your costume ahead of time. It will save you money and time.
Take your vitamins and get plenty of rest before hand - it is really a nonstop party during Carnival time.
Best Way To Get Around:
Taxis seem to be the transportation of choice for tourists, but we had the son of the guest house owner drive us around. I wouldn't recommend a car rental.
