In our younger days, Cathey and I camped on beaches from Maine to the Outer Banks to the Florida Keys. The first time we approached the Rockies by car, we thought we were seeing a cloud bank. Big Sur jade miners swapped stories with us around a California campfire.
As the years have passed, we’ve opted more for comfort, flying to destinations instead of driving, nestling into boutique hotels in the French Quarter and Aspen. In other words, we’ve done the Lower 48, with the possible exception of North Dakota, and we’ve traveled both on a shoestring and in style.
