Monster Truck Jam in St. Louis, MO

A February 2005 trip to St. Louis by jodellebobelle

St. Louis is a place for family, good food, great events, and tons of fun! It's a place you have to go just once, and if you haven't yet... it's time!

The Arch! Go to the Arch! What a neat once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to ride in a tiny little pod up to the top of the world's only arch you can travel up in! It's not for claustrophobic or those afraid of heights, however. Wanna take a picture of yourselves by the arch? Here's how! Have your subject stand in front of the arch wherever you like, then lie down on the ground and point your camera up at your subject with the whole arch in the background. It will be such a neat picture. Also, if you ever get the chance to be in St. Louis for the Monster Truck Jam, go! It's so fun, so loud, and worth every penny! We don't recommend children going unless you have earplugs for them, because our ears actually felt weird and a little tender after we left because its so loud. Make sure and go to Union Station. The fountains outside are great photo opps. Also walk through Laclede's landing; you can walk right to the Mississippi River and see what old time Saint Louis was really like.

Quick Tips:

If you are staying downtown, there are tons of places to eat, stay, and visit, all within walking distance--no need for a rental car. There is always something going on in Saint Louis. While we were there for the Monster Truck show, there was also another show in town, the St. Louis Women's Show. It was at the America's Center right by our hotel (Drury Inn and Suites Convention Center, highly recommended)and it was like a woman's carnival!! I had so much fun getting free massages, and free food, and free samples of lotions and creams and accessories. Again, check local event listings on the Saint Louis website because there is always something to do.

Best Way To Get Around:

We drove up the Saint Louis so we had our car. Not that we needed it because if you stay downtown you are pretty close to everything. We walked to the arch, Laclede's landing, the America's Center, and the Edward Jones Dome. There is also a Metro subway system available downtown and is very, very cheap.
I loved this hotel! Talk about close to everything! If you are going to the Edward Jones Stadium or the America's Center, stay here! It's right next door. Rooms were very clean, and beds were so comfortable. There was free long distance, free popcorn, and sodas in the room. There was also free HOT breakfast every morning, friendly, friendly staff, and did I mention that I loved this hotel? One pitfall was that the walls are paper-thin; maybe not all of them, but ours was, and we could hear the people next door all the time. Luckily, it was our family traveling with us. All the good of this hotel outweighs the paper-thin walls.

"OH! OH! OH!" That's what you'll be saying after your first bite at this place! It's got a great atmosphere, a great staff, and even a balloon artist. It's great for families and, oh wow, for great food! I recommend the spinach tortellini with Alfredo sauce. De-licious! For romance, grab a horse-drawn carriage to drive you through Laclede's Landing to the restaurant. You'll love it! FYI: When we went at around 7pm on a Friday night it was swamped and we waited for about 30 minutes but it was worth the wait.
