Once you have seen the many animals and Mount Kilimanjaro from Amboseli National Park and met the local Maasai, you will never forget the place and its people. It becomes part of you like no other place in the world.

Elephants in Front of Kilimanjaro
Go for early-morning game drives to see the animals when they are most active and catch a good view of Mt. Kilimanjaro. There is nothing quite like photographing big herds of elephants in front of this majestic mountain (the tallest free-standing mountain in the world). Once you have seen enough animals (lions and cheetahs are easy to find in Amboseli), visit one of the local Maasai villages and learn about their traditional lifestyle. I have been blessed that I became good friends with many of the local Maasai and am no longer considered a tourist, but a welcome guest in several of the villages.

Quick Tips:

Hire a tour from Nairobi. Amboseli is accessible via air or road. As far as roads go, the road to Amboseli is one of the better roads in Kenya and you can reach the park in approximately 3 1/2 hours from Nairobi. My preferred place to stay (if not staying in the Maasai village) is the Amboseli Serena Lodge (not affiliated with RCI) for its superior service, location, and beautiful accommodations.

Best Way To Get Around:

You cannot walk inside the park for safety reasons. The lodges have their own safari vehicles if you fly in, or you will arrive in a pop-up van if you choose a driving tour. As mentioned above, travel to Amboseli from Nairobi is easy and beautiful.

These accommodations were very comfortable and beautiful. Amboseli Serena Lodge is decorated in local themes with many Maasai artifacts. The service of this all-inclusive lodge cannot be beat. The on-site restaurant caters to a variety of tastes, with buffets for breakfast and lunch and buffet/menu combination for dinner. You will feel at home from the moment you arrive and are greeted by the staff and the local Maasai warriors who are employed to keep the Vervet monkeys at bay.

Amboseli, Kenya

Best Things Nearby:
Amboseli National Park

Best Things About the Resort:
Good facilities unequalled in Kenya, good security

Resort Experience:
The Public Campsite is managed by the local Maasais and is the best camp site I found in Kenya. It has bandanas with tents and matresses, as well as locations where you can pitch your own tents. There are numerous shower and toilet facilities and cooking facilities available. You can hire one of the locals to collect firewood, cook for you, and maintain your campsite to your liking. The campsite is actually just outside of Amboseli National Park, but one would not know that since there is no fence around the park (but the campsite is fenced with an electric fence to keep nighttime four-legged visitors out).
