This was not one of those trips where you try to fit all of Nova Scotia or even Cape Breton into one week. We stayed near Bay St. Lawrence and just relaxed and enjoyed the local area. We camped out and cooked off the fire and Coleman all week and watched the water and sunsets. We've never been more at peace or more comfortable. It was so relaxing and fresh and beautiful, I almost cried the morning we left to come home. Quick Tips: There are not a lot of things to do in Bay St. Lawrence except enjoy its sheer beauty. It's a very lovely area, almost like out of a picture book. We ...Read More

Best Things Nearby:Whale-watching, hiking, wildlife viewing (we saw a number of moose out on the cabot trail one morning), many good places to stop for seafood dinner, the nicest people you ever want to meetBest Things About the Resort:Some of the other campers there had their kayaks, and I found out why. The wildlife there is amazing. Out on a whale tour, we saw many jellyfish, eagles, seals, and even a horse running wild at one of the lighthouse sites. Being from Ontario, I really was impressed and loved that there were no mosquitos. That was great! (When up in the inland forest areas, there were a very few, but by the ocean, not one).Resort Experience:Th...Read More

Once you get into Meat Cove, the hike starts on an old mining road. You can't really miss it. You get to the end of the road, and there is a house with a can you can put money into to be allowed to park on their property. You can probably still drive an ATV up the mining road, but not a car, as it's washed out in many areas. About halfway up, you can either keep going onto the old mine, or you can break off into a big field, and there is a path you can pick up that takes you to a lighthouse on the coast. We chose the lighthouse, but unfortunately, it isn't used very often and soon became unfollowable. We turned back, but it's still well worth the trip. One thing about this trail and the north s...Read More

A Day at the Beach

The weather was perfect during our stay on the island, and so on a particularly hot day, we headed for Ingonish Beach. It was not hard to find; we noticed it on our way up to Bay St. Lawrence, and the drive back was so beautiful, we really didn't notice the distance. This isn't a beach with a dozen things to do. If you want it, bring it with you (for example, lunch, beach toys, chair, etc., though washrooms are available). The area was fantastic, and if you go and look to the south end of the beach, you can take a small walk over some rocks to another section of the beach. Being so hot, the main part of the beach was crowded, but this area was so clear that I was able to play wi...Read More

The Cabot Trail is an experience that everyone should experience at least once in their life. But a word of warning, if you make this trip once, odds are you will want to go back again and again. The ocean and mountain views are spectacular, and the winding, climbing, and descending roads will start your heart pounding. You could probably drive the entire Cabot trail in one day, but why? This is such an amazing adventure that I strongly suggest you stop to smell the roses along the way. And quite literally. I found the island to be immersed in wild flowers and blueberries. Our first day on the island...Read More

In Cape Breton we stayed at Bay St. Lawrence. This is right at the top of the island and very beautiful. We followed the Cabot trail, and the scenery was incredible. Each day we found something new to do and always had a lot of fun. One day we drove until we found a beach. It was a very hot day and the beach couldn't have been more perfect. If I can recommend something for souvenirs, go into some of the little towns along the way. My husband and I went into Neils Harbour and found a nice woman who, with her husband, builds working lighthouses. We brought three back with us. We looked but stayed away from the tourist trap type of souvenir shops. It seemed like most things were made in ...Read More
