Zza's Trattoria

Restaurant

This neighborhood favorite is a great kid destination. Why? Ask your waiter to turn on the lights and he or she will yell "Lights!" Someone in the open kitchen will then saunter over and flick on the switch for the huge sign spelling "Zza's" in hundreds of red and white bulbs! The whole restaurant changes color (and temperature), kids will smile and adults are requred to clap and cheer. The atmosphere is downhome and friendly, as though you'd been there before. They hold annual sweatshirt design contests and if you provide them with a photo from a trip of you wearing their sweatshirt, you'll get a free entree! The cuisine is California-Italian - what's that mean? few heav...Read More

Children's Fairyland

Best Of IgoUgo

Attraction

Believe it or not, this park was the model for Disneyland - Walt even stole the park's first director away to help him create Disneyworld!

Interactive play areas bring to life many of the best fairy tales and nursery rhymes, including Alice in Wonderland, the Old Woman who Lived in a Shoe, a pirate ship, Robinson Crusoe's island, Humpty Dumpty, Three Men in a tub; well, you get the idea.

Other highlights include puppet shows, several rides (train, boat, merry-go-round, ferris wheel) a small petting zoo area, and a large, fast dragon-shaped slide!

I visited here even before I had kids!

Oakland Zoo

Attraction

Quote:
The Oakland Zoo is a smaller, modern, natural zoo, with over 100 species of animals in 58 exhibits. For one month before Christmas every year, the Zoo is open from 5:30 - 9:00 pm for a special Zoo Lights event. What is Zoo Lights? A train ride viewing 100 lighted structures built with over 100,000 lights - animals mostly. AMazing! There's a 15-minute long "Sky Ride" chair lift which offers views from above the animals, as well as panoramic views of the SF bay. additionally, there is a a two-thirds size replica of the Civil War-era locomotive train ride and a merry-go-round. Grand Lake Theater + Wurlitzer

Best Of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Grand Lake Movie Theater + Wurlitzer"

Quote:
This great old movie house opened in 1926. It has managed to survive nicely in this day of sterile cardboard cutout movie houses. Although it hasn't survived completey intact - it's been divided into main floor/balconey/and two small side rooms - it's kept most of its character. The lobby is beautifully decorated, with a sweeping staircase up to the second floor and huge chandelier. Each smaller section has its own theme - Egyptian and Moorish are two examples. If it's Saturday afternoon, and you are very lucky, arrive early for a special treat - the enormous Wurlitzer will rise and be played by a very talented individual. You know the show is about to start when it sinks back down accompanied b...Read More

USS Hornet Museum

Attraction

This WWII aircraft carrier has been turned into a floating, interactive museum. Tours are self-guided, with many docents available for questioning. As you enter through the Hangar Deck, you'll probably be greeted by live big band music. On this deck you can examine several planes and choppers up close and the enormous elevator used to lift them to the Flight Deck. There is also an Apollo 11 and 12 exhibit and some astronauts footprints that you can walk in! Climbing up many stairs, you'll be able to stand on the enormous Flight Deck high above the water. Here you'll have an unparalled view of San Francisco and the bay over the guns of the Hornet. You can also visit the pilot house, capt...Read More

Robert Crown Memorial

This park includes a long stretch of sandy beach, with a huge grass park at one end and Elsie Roemer Bird Sanctuary at the other. The waves are small, with no rip at all, making it safe for kids to swim. The water temperature will discourage them from staying in too long however. Windsurf equipment and sailboats may be available for rent (seasonal). It does get very popular on hot summer days, so go early or get shutout. The beach isn't even the best feature - it's far and away the view of San Francisco's skyline, the Bay Bridge, and the SF bay! Additionally, Crab Cove is not only a terrific place to learn about nature, it also contains historic exhibits. In the 20s this...Read More
